VICTORY FOR SALMON Brilliant Filly Snowflake Accounts I for Historic Ladies Handicap Harry Payne Whitneys Equipoise EquipoiseEasily Easily Defeats Happy Scot in inKeene Keene Memorial Stakes NEW YORK N Y May 17 Walter J Salmons pink silks were carried to their first triumph in the Ladies Handicap by Snowflake this afternoon at Belmont Park before a crowd estimated at 25000 persons A great afternoon of sport was offered for the immense gathering under cloudy skies and over a good track In addition to the sixtieth running of the Ladies Handicap the Keene Memorial Stakes also attracted much interest with H P Whitneys Equi ¬ poise victorious victoriousSnowflake Snowflake ran back to her great race in the Preakness Stakes in which she finished third behind Gallant Fox and Crack Bri ¬ gade The chestnut daughter of Mad Hat ter and Snowdrop which took the Endurance Handicap at Bowie last fall came from the rear with a great rush on the turn into the stretch and drawing away won easily by a length from H P Whitneys Dustem all which had a fivelengths margin over her stablemate Flimsy A like distance back Red Rag was fourth a half a length before Lace which outstayed Goose Egg by a head headFrom From a poor start Flimsy sprinted into a clear lead on the outside As Flimsy set a fast pace around the far turn Duest emall moved up on the outside while Schae fer was moving up with the Salmon filly on the inside On the turn Flimsy moved into second place while Red Rag had drawn slightly ahea l of Lace Snowflake was staying close to the rail all the while and at the halfmile post had an excellent posi ¬ tion As the leaders turned into the stretch they came a trifle wide and Schaefer seized the opportunity to drive Snowflake through on the inside and at the quavter post she poked her nose in front of Flimsy FlimsyWI WI EIl EASED UP UPSnowflake Snowflake quickly drew away while Work ¬ man was losing much ground with Dust email In the stretch Workman made a des ¬ perate effort on the Whitney filly but Snow flake was clear and in the final few yards Schaefer was able to ease up his mount with the result that the winners margin was only a length Flimsy easily held third place while Red Rag outgamed Lace and Goose Egg for fourth place The winners portion was 4375 and the x one mile was run in 140 flat For the third time in eighteen renewals of the Keene Memorial Stakes four and a half furlongs over the Widener course Harry Payne Whitney furnished the win ¬ ner His latest representative to score was Equipoise handsome chestnut son of Pen nant and Swining which defeated four other colts for a 7G25 purse Ridden by Sonny AVorkman Equipoise a strong favorite wore down Samuel Ross Happy Scot in the final quarter to win going away by two lengths James Butlers Avaricious after running greenly through the race was third some eight lengths back of Happy Scot and a length in the van of Mad Career which had but a head margin over Masked Ball the only other starter starterAt At the start all but Equipoise were off in alignment The Whitney colt appeared to be knocked back but Workman took him to the inside and gradually catching up with the others which raced almost head and head for a furlong Equipoise was in a good position in the final three furlongs furlongsASSERTS ASSERTS SUPEIUO1UTY In the last quarter Equipoise and Happy Scot drew away from the others and when Coltiletti saw the Whitney youngster draw ing up to him he went to the whip on Happy Scot Workman was content with a hand ride and entering the last furlong the pair were head and head Coltilettis urging was of no avail and Equipoise steadily wore him down and at the finish was two lengths clear Avaricious shook off the other two entering the last quarter and then swerved to the inside rail but Robertson was able to prevent him from bumping the fence and he kept on to take third place Equipoise completed the four and a half furlongs in 52 52Dabster Dabster which races for Mrs Clyde Phil ¬ lips and ridden by M Knight was winner oC the first race of the day which was for the better grade of platers The Sagamore Sta ¬ ble was second with Montferrat while N E Stantons recent Maryland arrival Tony Joe was third A field of eleven started and Dabster was more or less neglected Montferrat Adamas and Jack Biener set the early pace while Dabster was far back On tha far turn Knight moved up on the out side while Montferrat had disposed of his early challengers and drew away In the stretch the Sagamore Stable representative appeared the winner but in the final furlong gave way to the determined rush of Dabster A stirring finish between two of the recog nized leaders of the steeplechase field Ban gle from the Dorwood Stable and Mrs Payne Whitneys veteran Jolly Roger came in the Coligny Steeplechase which was de ¬ cided over the twomile course with twelve jumps The Dorwood Stable representative ridden by Pat Donoghue defeated Jolly Roger at the end by a neck but in a finish that had the huge Saturday crowd screaming encouragement to both horses and riders at the finish F Ambrose Clarks Cloverdale ridden by Albert Bostwick was a distant third Bangle and Jolly Roger throughout the journey staged a duel that had every ono excited The two raced over the first turn of the field lapped on each other and far in advance of My Care which was leading the others The second turn Lambert eased back Jolly Roger for a breathing spell and then Donoghue sent Bangle into a longer load It appeared as if the veteran was done for but he still had something left Racing to the eleventh jump after taking the turn Lambert brought Jolly Roger up with a rush Taking the final obstacle a length behind the leader he was gaining at every stride to wards the finish Bangle favored by the difference in weights stuck it out gamely to the finish to score by a neck Clovcrdali had no trouble in finishing third
