VICTORY FOR PORTMANTEAU Maiden Defeats Honey Locust in Churchill Downs Feature Track Conditions Muddy for Last Three ThreeRaces Races Reverberate Is Best of ofFillies Fillies in Fourth LOUISVILLE Ky May 23 The Corbin Purse at threequarters best race on this afternoons program at Churchill Downs re ¬ sulted in the outstanding upset of the meet ¬ ing when E B McLeans Portmanteau a maiden was returned victorious over such others from among the threeyearolds as Honey Locust Stock Market Blot Whisp and three additional ones of less renown Nicely suited by the muddy track which re ¬ sulted from a severe shower which developed only a short time before the field left the paddock for the race the victor led through ¬ out and won handily by a half length from the strongly supported Honey Locust which was coupled with Ladrone Stock Market finished a length away and three lengths in front of Blot BlotThe The winner a son of The Porter and The Minx II coming through in a manner which belied his previous performances under almost like conditions repaid his comparatvely few backers by odds of more than 90 to 1 Show ¬ ing the most speed from the outset he was never fully extended and but for Nick Huffs election to ease him in the stretch he might have pulled away to the most decisive win of the afternoon afternoonDuring During the early racing Honey Locust was under brisk pressure to keep within a half length of the McLean colt but she continued resolutely after losing second place for a brief time to Stock Market in the stretch and the confident Huff was forced to mildly shake up the winner during the closing twenty yards yardsProse Prose and Poetry J Kederis threeyear old son of Omar Khayyam and Mary Rose II which was placed in three of his four starts last year opened his second campaign with a victory when he easily defeated thirteen other maidens in the six and onehalf furlongs opening offering Kenneth Russell brought him from behind the early pace and he drew away to win by one and onehalf lengths over Outpost Third went to Material a rank outsider which for a time kept in closest attendance attendanceWhen When called upon the victor sprinted to the front on the outside of the leaders and after drawing into safe command was not menaced by Outpost as he closed some ground through the final drive The winner was backed almost to the exclusion of the others Continued on twentyfourth page VICTORY FOR PORTMANTEAU Continued from first page La Salle a likely son of Olambala and Golden Stairs in the Valley Lake Stable was the winner of the second race the daily con ¬ test for maiden juveniles and won in rather impressive fashion Battle Sweep and Anthro were second and third as named The win ¬ ner making his first start showed good speed from the start and after disposing of Rusty another making his initial appearance and confidently backed drew away into a safe lead and won with much in reserve some three lengths in the van of Battle Sweep A big saving of ground during the final five sixteenths aided the latter and he finished fast a length in advance of Anthro which just lasted for third thirdRusty Rusty from the W A Hanger Stable and a son of Wise Counsellor and Tea Cake had the support of his connections but after showing speed to the stretch gave way badly and followed far back at the end endW W C Weant local turfman accounted for his first purse during the meeting when his Lady Clarence ridden by 1C Russell raced from behind the leader with a rush in the stretch to score over Spot Light Pompon and five others from among the cheaper grade fillies and mares in the third race This was decided over one mile and a sixteenth and the placed trio together with Madcap Marvin raced past Chatter Black and Dorita after the latter pair finished their duel for the lead After reaching the last quarter Chatter Black and Dorita had little left and their retire ¬ ment during the final eighth was rapid rapidA A second favorite raced home in front when Reverberate the Greentree Stable starter got up in a driving finish to carry off honors in the fourth race Plumage under the Gal laher Combs colors was second after having shown the way to the final fifty yards and Ournan followed followedAfter After retaining the lead against repeated challenges from Mexican D Plumage found the winners final rush too much and a short distance after Mexican D retired she gave way to the fast finishing victor At the finish Reverberate led by a half length while Plumage just managed to keep going well enough to prove the runnerup
