being the biggest upset of the day dayTAKES TAKES EARLY LEAD LEADIn In the Queens Hotel Handicap a minute was lost before a start could be effected and it was Black Diamond that went out to lead the way Panuco which has shown several smart efforts over this course went out with the Salmon starter and the pair raced closely lapped around the first turn with Swatter just a short distance back of the pair and leading Sun Mcta MctaPanuco Panuco dropped back midway of the back stretch and all efforts of his rider J Maibcn proved unable to keep him stepping with Black Diamond The latter was going along at a good clip and he readily drew out until the far turn found him winging in front by five lengths Panuco was still dropping back and Swatter moved into sec ¬ ond position while Sun Meta had also dis ¬ placed the J F Byers starter Black Dia ¬ mond was allowed a breathing spell as he entered into the homestretch and as he sped to the last furlong pole he was just a length in advance of Swatter Through the re maining stages Black Diamond when shaken up drew out steadily and the end found him gradually going into a longer advantage Swatter was fifteen lengths before Sun Meta and Panuco was a length further back backThe The II P Whitney stable furnished the winner and the favorite of the first race of the day when Summer Day went to the post a prohibitive choice in the Victorious Plate Summer Day lived up to what was expected of her when she easily outran the others at all stages of the short race In addition to making good at small odds Summer Day made a new track record when she ran the route a fifth of a second better than the old mark of 53 53Five Five others opposed the Whitney filly and none was good enough to offer her enough contention to have A Robertson put her to a drive Despite this Summer Day finished the route leading Steal Away by five lengths while third fell to the Mount Royal Stables Lovey Girl when she led Justone Vice and Bella Dodge home homeOBSERVATION OBSERVATION SURPRISES SURPRISESThere There was a surprise when Observation scored in a driving finish to account for the third event another test devoted entirely to youngsters when he was up Jn the last seventy yards of the short sprint to take the measure of B OF Randolphs Noisy Miss with third going to Mrs V Langs Fast Life The latter led Gobi Mrs J P Mayberrys entrant and the five others that made up the number numberObservation Observation racing forwardly from the be ¬ ginning secured racing room on the inside of the leaders when swinging for home staged a bold rush to get through a narrow passage and in a game finish was up to beat Noisy Miss out by a head The latter after set ¬ ting the pace until collared by the victor saved second two and a half lengths before Fast Life which in turn was three lengths clear of Gobi GobiGeneral General Toy a winner at the meeting earlier in the week was the disappointment in this He cut little figure in the running at no time getting into contention to offer any serious challenges challengesOne One of the outstanding steeplechase sur ¬ prises of the meeting took place with the run ¬ ning of the Thickthorn Steeplechase a test that had decision at two and onequarter miles over seventeen jumps when John Sobieski performing for the Beverly Stable turned up winner of the number that found him a rank outsider amongst the seven that competed of which only five finished In this the Queen City Stables Irish Jig mak ¬ ing his first start in a couple of years raced to the place beaten four lengths while Oak ¬ land from the Eastland Farm Stable was third leading Orions Sword and Smart Sin ¬ ner by a wide margin
