CLOVERDAlELEADSHUNTERSl Steeplechasers With Gentlemen Riders Hold Stage A C Bostwicks Mount Scores Handily With WithHock Hock of Cashcl Second Thomas Talno TalnoThird Third Meek First Winner NEW YORK N T May 23 Hunters with gentleman riders had the center of tho stage at Belmont Park today with the run ¬ ning of the Aiken Hunters Steeplechase as the big feature This resulted in rather an easy victory for F Ambrose Clarks Clover dale cleverly ridden by A C Bostwick with Rock of Cashel from the Essex Stable and ridden by C Burton in second place B G Guths Thomas Paine was piloted into third place by J V H Davis DavisThe The only others to finish were Louis K Liggetts Solyman ridden by C W Shaw and S A Warner Baltazzis Friend Frank with C R White in the saddle Three went amiss when first A Lydlow Kramers Flower Rock with L Wright up fell at the tenth fence and then at the fourteenth Rigan McKinney came down with his Nicias At the time first Flower Rock and then Niciaa was racing second to the winner Earlier in the running William A Phillips Saratof had bolted around an inside wing with E Atter bury Fortunately all three of these riders escaped injury injuryWith With a day of midsummer warmth and the track at its best the sport furnished was firstclass though there was no stake of im ¬ portance except this hunters chase down for decision The hunters attracted a big crowd of their set and the general attendance was of generous proportions proportionsFLOWER FLOWER ROCK PACEMAKER PACEMAKERFrom From a good start in the steeplechase Flower Rock was the one to go out to set the pace but Mr Bostwick had Cloverdale under restraint back of him and he was galloping smoothly and apparently able to go to the front at any time Solyman for the early racing was in third place while the others were fairly well bunched with Nicias bringing up the rear and being pa ¬ tiently reserved by Mr McKinney McKinneyIt It was at the lower end of the field the second turn of the course that Flower Rock went down and there Cloverdale moved into a good lead At the same time McKinney began his move on Nicias and he quickly went into second place The gray was going exceedingly well back of the Ambrose Clark hunter when he made his mistake and went down This made the score sure for Clover dale and he had only to stand up to be winner in hand by ten lengths lengthsRock Rock of Cashel which had been galloping steadily had little trouble taking the place and there was little to oppose Thomas Paine for third After his fall Nicias raced with his field to finish second to Cloverdale riderless but he did not appear to in any fashion interfere with the other runners runnersOPESEK OPESEK TO 3IEEK 3IEEKMeek Meek a filly that raced for William Garth in Maryland was winner over a big field of plater juveniles that met in the opening four and a half furlongs over the Widener course Traitor from the California Stable raced to the place with Mrs Walter M Jef ¬ fords Kaleidoscope racing third thirdThere There were twenty lined up at the barrier and some trouble was experienced before the start was had As the big company left Meek and Shield a starter from the George D Widener stable were more alert than the others and they went out to set the pace There was little to choose between the pair until the last eighth where Shield stopped badly while Meek came away to score by three lengths lengthsTraitor Traitor which had left the post a bit slowly met with some interference but he finished with a rush along the rail that landed him safely in the place and Kaleido ¬ scope was running over horses at the end when he was only beaten a head for second Mrs K E Hitts Madam Queen also finished strongly to beat the others othersThe The Willow a mile race for fillies and mares run as the third event saw H P Whitneys Dustemall a rather easy winner over W R Coes Conclave with Banner ¬ ette from the Sage Stable just saving third from the Greentree Stables Goose Egg EggChalice Chalice and Conclave were the ones to cut out the pace from a good start while Val Cranes Crossco left the post so slug ¬ gishly as to be far out of the running all through the early stages Workman had Dustemall away nicely but he made no effort to send her after the leaders and was content to hold his position with the daugh ¬ ter of Chicle going along smoothly smoothlyIt It was after rounding out of the back stretch that Fator made a move with Goose Egg and she quickly moved by both Con ¬ clave and Chalice to go into a good lead But Dustemall was losing no ground and Workman was riding her with rare con ¬ fidence Goose Egg did not last long but Conclave was not through and she moved again on the stretch turn though she was under a drive Then it was that Workman circled around and ranged alongside with the Whit ¬ ney filly It was no trick to wear Conclave down and at the end the daughter of Chicle was winner by two lengths Conclave had beaten Bannerette which outstayed the oth ¬ ers by five lengths while Goose Egg stopped badly when the final pinch came
