COLLAR BONE BROKEN SMOOT RIDES WINNER NEW YORK N Y May 23 None in the tig Belmont Park crowd Wednesday who saw Rooney from the Brookmeade Stable Stablewin win the short course steeplechase knew that Charlie Smoot who piloted him to victory rode with his collarbone broken in two places He had taken his mount over eight jumps with his right arm absolutely helpless and it was one of the most remarkable exhibi ¬ tions ever seen on a race course courseIn In a previous race won by Taras Hall Tuesday Smoot had a fall with Eon He complained after that tumble that he had pain in his collarbone and evidently it had at least been cracked by that tumble Then when he rode Rooney he said that he felt it pop as he took the water jump At once he lost all power in his right arm and until he could steady himself he took the lines in his teeth There were eight more jumps and Smoot stuck it out though he must have suffered intensely intenselyAfter After the race Gwyri Tomkins who had sent Rooney to the post had an Xray taken of the injury and it was discovered the col ¬ larbone was broken in two places
