laTTFTiUT 1 VFAfcT A F A i A r TTTn INlERNATIONAi TTTnINlERNATIONAi CHARACTER Challenger One of Englands Best BestJuveniles Juveniles of 1929 Is Named Namedfor for Arlington Classic The second Classic Arlington Parks great gallop of one mile and a quarter for 3year olds with 70000 added which should pay its winner that amount or more will have an international aspect this year Chris ¬ topher J Fitzgerald has just cabled the nomination in the name of W L Brann and R E Castle both Chicagoans who are racing under the assumed name Branncastle Stable of Challenger one of Englands crack twoyearolds of the last year in the esti ¬ mation of her leading handicappers last December DecemberMr Mr Fitzgerald the Arlington Park Jockey Clubs representative in Europe purchased Challenger from the estate of Lord Dewar three or four days ago for the young Chicago sportsmen The acquisition of Challenger was made possible through the death of Lord Dewar which invalidated his dates in the first class stakes of the current British season According to the announced plans of his new owners Challenger will leave London June 7 on the steamship Minnetonka and will start for Chicago as soon as he arrives in this country Between this and the day of his debarkation he will be kept in training at Beckhampton by Fred Dar ¬ ling lingA A strapping bay Challenger began his juvenile career at Goodwood Park last July with a victory in a revival of the Richmond Stakes a dash of threequarters over Gwyniad Brabant Sardana Hieroglyphic Golden Grace Crossway First Shot and Lucky Ted He finished it at Newmarket October 15 by licking Teacup Anthurium Pellcgrina Sharps Express Senator and Rear Admiral in a renewal of the Clearwell a sprint of fiveeighths He packed 122 pounds in the Richmond 133 in the Clearwell and through these victories contributed to the 95000 earned by Lord Dewars stable in the course of the season Up to the time of his death Dewar entertained high hopes of winning this years Derby at Epsom with him Challenger is a son of Swynford and Sword Play PlayChallenger Challenger cost 5000 guineas somewhat more than 25000 as a yearling and had been held since the death of Lord Dewar for 15000 guineas or about 80000 Fitz ¬ gerald did not say what sort of a bargain he drove for the Chicagoans but he cabled Charles McCulloch chairman of the board of directors of the Arlington Park Jockey Club and Otto Lehmann president that it took three weeks hard work to put the deal for the colt through
