j INTERIOR FINISHES FAST Wins Thistle Down Fifth After Lafayette Sets Pace Aged Brunswick Scores Another Victory Gaining Decision Over Big Bill Thomp ¬ son Peggy J Is Beaten CLEVELAND Ohio June 2 Summerlike weather prevailed today and racing at Thistle Down was staged under ideal conditions The track was at its best and the attendance for Monday usually an offday was surpris ¬ ingly large Evenly balanced fields paraded in the majority of the seven events and the racing was formful formfulClosing Closing with good courage on the outside of her field entering the stretch C V Carhis Interior raced by Lafayette the pace ¬ maker to a handy victory during the final stages of the fifth race Lafayette proved to be easily best of the others Brownie Smile and Yachtsman staged the real thrill of the race for the show honors and the former proved the gamer gamerA A real surprise resulted in the initial race when J N Camdens Mavro came with a rush on the outside of the leaders in the final furlong and in a drive got up to earn the verdict by a narrow margin He paid a long price Wee Margie raced into second place handily after Snooty and Justa Queen tired In a drive Peggy J just saved third from the fastfinishing Black Lula LulaTaking Taking command shortly after the start the veteran sprinter Brunswick showed the way by a rather comfortable margin there ¬ after in the second race adding another to his already long list of victories for Joe Cooper Big Bill Thompson was always in second place and was best of the others It was only in a driving finish that Purple Light got the short end of the purse from the fastfinishing Beau Aspin Meriwick was in a contending position when he went wide entering the stretch stretchAfter After following the pace of Captain J S closely to the stretch in the third race jockey Ellsworth called on Stupendous and shook off the pacemaker during the final eighth to score rather handily Captain J S was best of the others however Irfaneh the favorite was within striking distance of the field all the way and could never get to to the leaders but outgamed Prancing Step for third thirdMcKim McKim carried the colors of the Hammatt Brothers to the front at once in the fourth event withstood an early challenge from Al ¬ bert Blanton but was never headed and re ¬ tained a safe margin all through the stretch Troubanova came stoutly on the outside of the opposition when turning for home and with little difficulty disposed of the tiring Albert Blanton for the second honors Lieu ¬ tenant Mansfield showed some early speed but tired badly
