FASHION STAKES TO ZELIDE Whitney Silks in Front Sixth Time Since 1917 Midsummer Weather nnd Fast Track Prevail Prevailat at Ilelmont Park Valorous Wins WinsIn In Steeplechase NEW YORK N T June 3 For the sixth time since 1917 the H P Whitney silks were triumphant in the Fashion Stakes which was renewed at Belmont Park this afternoon This fell to Zelide the good daughter of Mad Hatter and Wendy and it added just 6800 to her earnings Sunny Lassie racing for Mrs William Ziegler Jrs Middleburg Stable raced to second place while Edward R Bradleys Baba Kenny beat Panasette a stablemate of the winner for third thirdThe The other Whitney winners in the Fashion Stakes have been Rosie OGrady Prudery Cresta Mother Goose and Pandera Condi ¬ tions were ideal for the sport The day was of midsummer warmth while the track was at its best So little wind was stirring that the fast time was inevitable The crowd was a big one and the sport worthy worthyEleven Eleven went to the post for the Fashion Stakes and the start was a good one though Panasette was so slow to be under way that she was last and Robertson had to drive her sharply to race into contention Baba Kenny was the first to show from the start but she was bumped a bit and then it was Chicsu that was showing the way but Zelide be ¬ ginning from the outside position was right with the contention and going well and Panasette had been driven to such good ad ¬ vantage by Robertson that she quickly found her way into third place alongside of Baba Kenny and Sunny Lassie followed closely but in an outside position Continued on twentyfourth page FASHION STAKES TO ZELIDE Continued from first page It was in the final furlong that Zelide drew away slightly but Workman had to ride her out vigorously to make the victory certain and at the end her margin was a half length Sunny Lassie had outgamed Baba Kenny which also finished rapidly to save third place by half a length and Panasette was a couple of lengths further back backMrs Mrs S Bennets Star Flyer under a well timed ride by Robertson was winner of the opening race which brought out rather a nice lot of platers Mombasa from the Dor wood Stable after cutting out all the pace raced to the place and J A Coburns Span taft was third The start was a good one and Mombasa at once sprinted away into a good led The others followed in fairly close order but Catrone soon moved with Spantaft until he had the filly safely in seccJnd place and under restraint back of the Dorwood filly Going to the stretch turn Catrone moved on Spantaft and as he did Knight went to a drive on Mombasa and she fought along well enough to meet the chal ¬ lenge lengeThe The pair of them swung into the stretch lapped but Spantaft seemed best though she was being hard ridden t In the meantime Robertson had been moving up steadily with Star Flyer and as the other two battled along he went on by and was the winner by three lengths Then Mombasa after being apparently beaten by Spantaft came again to outgame the daughter of Spanish Prince II and save the place by a head headThe The Cedar Hurst Steeplechase over the short course saw Valorous from the Green tree Stable a comparatively easy winner over Le Digard from the Eastland Farm Stable with Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Brown Stout saving thrid from R B Strassburgers The Ace II Seven started Airs C V B Cush mans Dragon de Vertu which raced coupled with Le Digard fell at the ninth jump when moving into a contending position Valorous was a much more alert horse than he was in his recent race when he was outrun at all stages Lambert permitted him to race with the leaders and he was prominent at all stages Flower Rock raced with the win ¬ ner for half a turn of the big field but that took the run out of him and eventually he dropped back so badly that he finished last Nine of the best sprinters in training started in the fourth race a highweight han ¬ dicap over six furlongs on the Widener course This saw George D Wideners Finite the winner when he led home The Heathen racing for C Harvey Pierce while third fell to W R Coes Caruso when he outfinished Byrd and Tuskegee TuskegeeFinite Finite beginning well dominated most of the race and Osmand and The Heathen raced after him with Osmand between the pair There was little to choose among the three approaching the final furlong but there Osmand dropped back slightly and it ap I peared that he was too much for as light a rider as Knight As the big fellow tired Knight was of no help and Finite drew away until he was a length and a half clear in the meantime Caruso on the outside was moving up gallantly and both Tuskegee arid Byrd were beginning to show The Heathen continued to draw up on Finite at the end until the Widener colt was only winner by a half length Caruso was at the heels of Thef Heathen and two lengths before Byrd which had just beaten Tuskegee for fourth fourthOsmand Osmand quit badly in the final furlong to finish far back backThere There was an added interest in the fifth race because of the fact that James Butlers Belmont hope Questionnaire was a starter He was an easy winner in the fast time of 149 and after the finish Workman per ¬ mitted him to go along for the mile and a quarter in 203 It was a decidedly im ¬ pressive move for the big race of Saturday A C Bostwicks Yarn raced to second place with Crucifixion from the Lone Star Stable third and W R Coes Nile Maiden the only other starter badly beaten off offThe The Tedlu Stable shipped Spearhead to Thorncliffe Park to fulfill a stake engage ¬ ment there
