SPEARHEAD PLATE WINNER Race Named for Prince of Wales Captured by Tedlu Stable Tctrarchal and Gowan Finish Noses Apart Apartfor for Third Place in 7500 Feature Featureof of Thorncliffes Final Day TORONTO Ont June 3 Spearhead rac ing for the Tedlu Stable and ridden in fault ¬ less fashion by jockey E Steffen was returned the winner of the second running of the Prince of Wales Plate a test that was endowed with a purse of 7500 It was the richest event offered by the Thorncliffe Breeders and Racing Association for their spring term of racing that came to an end here this afternoon afternoonThe The Prince of Wales Plate a gallop of one mile and one furlong arranged especially for threeyearolds and the produce of Cana ¬ dian and British parentage brought a field of six into contention with Tetrarchal and Gowan racing in the interest T f the Howe Stable This entry was the favorite and finished second and third thirdIt It was a furious finish The American owned pair were noses apart and were beaten only a half length by Spearhead Gowan was just a length before R W R Cowies Kingsway and the two others were far back backThe The winner received 5339 and in addition a silver trophy of good size was awarded to trainer George Strate on behalf of the Tedlu Stable StableThe The event brought a huge getaway day crowd but to the Leaside course for the closing of a most successful meeting meetingH H Haymakers Ebuford heavily supported for the seven furlongs of the opening race made good for his supporters leading Mrs L A Dennys Disapproved to the end to score by a neck Mrs C Benners Trapland raced into third place Perfect Alibi fed the others othersThe The Pending Stable furnished the winner of the second race a split of the opening contest when jockey W Cannon had Way ¬ farer home the winner over C E Wierniks Black Pride with third falling to E H Van Roenns Applaud when he led home M J McNulty Jr from the F Nancolas barn barnThe The third race was another over seven fur ¬ longs that was made up from the overflow of entries received for the first of the day This saw H P Whitneys castoff Letalone now performing for C R Fleischmann an easy winner when he led J J Corcorans Rundale by five lengths and H G Bedwells Vellas was eight lengths further back to take third from Rosswin and the six others othersSeven Seven good sprinters started in the Alder shot Purse the fourth race and this pro ¬ duced one of the closest finishes of the day when three of the starters came to the fin ¬ ish so closely aligned that the officials alone could determine the winner The H C Hatch Stable took the purse when French Lass got the decision with Lamp Black earning second for the Palmwood Stable and Little Gyp taking third in the silks of C C Hastings Wave Top chased the trio home and the others were more or less strung out
