SPECTACULAR GALLOP Gallant Fox Covers Mile and an Eighth in 14935 Preakness and Kentucky Derby DerbyWinner Winner Displays Wonderful WonderfulSpeed Speed in Workout NEW YORK N Y June 3 In a wonder ¬ ful exhibition of sustained speed at Belmont Park this morning William Woodwards Gal ¬ lant Fox gave a sensational evidence of his readiness for the Belmont Stakes at one mile and a half to be run Saturday The son of Sir Gallahad III covered a mile and a furlong in 149 just a second and a fifth slower than the Ariierican record and Belmont Park race record for the distance The trial was done with comparative ease and was a move to suggest that the winner of the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby is a better colt today than he was before the running of either of those big events He was ridden by Earl Sande who has piloted him jm his three winning races of the year and will be in the saddle Saturday SaturdayGallant Gallant Fox has been trained at Aqueduct by James Fitzsimmons but was taken to Belmont Park for his trial in order to run over the same ground over which he is to race The son of Sir Gallahad III was in a running mood and the work was so sen ¬ sational that many horsemen who have fa ¬ vored Whichone for the Belmont Stakes have swung over to Mr Woodwards colt Conditions were ideal for the speed test with no wind blowing the weather warm and the going at its best The colt which has frequently refused to extend himself freely in trials was in a particularly cheer ¬ ful frame of mind and gave what was really a racing exhibition exhibitionFrisius Frisius was used as a running mate for the first part of the work and then Bobbles joined the colt for the latter part but he put them both away with his great exhibition exhibitionRacing Racing the first furlong in 12 he covered the second in 11 to take him to the quarter in 23 The next furlong in 12 saw him at the three furlongs mark in 35 Then there came another furlong in 11 to reach the half in 47 A fifth furlong in 12 reached the five furlongs mark in 59 and there Sande took hold of his mount slightly around the turn and a furlong in 12 saw him at the six furlongs mark in 1 11 11Still Still another furlong in 12 brought him to the seven furlongs mark in 124 and when the mile was reached in 1 36 he had run his eighth furlong in 12 The last fur ¬ long was run in 13 to finish out the mile and a furlong in 1 49 and he was galloped out the mile and a quarter in 207 207The The work was one of the most sensational private exhibitions ever recorded by any horse and after the move the colt was none the worse for his fast work Sande said he had no idea of how fast the colt was moving and he was surprised when shown the time Fitzsimmons will keep Gallant Fox at Bel ¬ mont Park until he fills his engagement in the Belmont Stakes Saturday He will be quartered in William Hogans stable stableT T J Healey announced that he would give Whichone his final trial Wednesday The son of Chicle came out of the Withers Stakes magnificently and it is expected that his move will be at least a mile and a furlong and probable a mile and a quarter quarterThe The trial of the Woodward colt created a great impression and it was the one topic among horsemen to the exclusion of the days racing There were some who expressed the opinion that it was really too fast to work a good horse but the colt came out of the trial in such excellent condition that the general opinion was that he is a remarkable colt and at the top of his form
