JUDGE SCHILLING BES1 Spreckels Campaigner Scores Easihj at Hialeah Park Course. Threatened Strike of Grooms Del lays Start of Program Baccic occo Displays Brilliant Speed ; 1 MIAMI, Fla., Jan. 15. After the big opening of the Hialeah season of the Miami Jockey Club, there followed another good day of sport over the big course this afternoon. It was sport that attracted a surprisingly large crowd of enthusiasts. Weather conditions were ideal and, while five of the seven offerings were over the six furlongs distance, the fields for the most part were well balanced, and that atoned for the monotony of the program. i There was some delay before the first race, owing to a misunderstanding that threatened a strike of the grooms, when they were barred from an enclosure where they could view the races, but that was happily arranged after a short conference. The feature position on the card was given to the Homestead Purse, a condition race of six furlongs, and it resulted in a handy, victory for Rudolph Spreckels good campaigner, Judge Schilling. Forcing most of the pace, he led home J. L. Johnsons Chat-ford, a recent winner at Tropical Park, with Jack Howards Street Singer saving third from C. V. Whitneys Thais. j KELSAY ON WINNER. "Bill" Kelsay had the mount on the win-? ner, and when the son of Hand Grenade began promptly, he lost no time in taking: command. When clear of the others, Kelsay, was content to rate along a length to the good, and the old gelding was so nicely, in hand when the head of the stretch was reached that he drew away with little effort to a score of a length and a half. Peto, the William Woodward starter, chased after the winner almost to the stretch turn, but there he tired badly, and evidently needed the race to bring him to1 his best condition. As he tired, Chatford moved into second place, and Street Singer, which had been badly outrun in the early? stages, also moved up menacingly. Thais, which had made a move leaving the back stretch in an effort to come through on the inside like Peto, needed the race, and she tired in the stretch, while Tarzan and Applecart cut no figure. The strike of the grooms held up the start of the first race for some little time and it was 2:30 before the horses reached the post. This was a six furlongs dash and it resulted in rather a handy victory for F. A. Carreauds Double Heart, with Rudolph Spreckels Jack Campbell saving second place from George D. Wideners War Saint,; while Fervid was the one to be fourth. The Daytona Beach Purse, for masculine three-year-olds, resulted in an excellent contest in which George Wideners Blackmock was the winner, with J. E. Wideners Broadway Lights just saving second place from Bud Fischers Last Attempt and the Howe stables Sansarica was fourth. GARNERS RIDE FACTOR. i In the stretch, Blackmock held his oppo nents safe to be the winner by a length, while it took all of Garners skill and energy to save second place by a nose from Last Attempt. Sansarica, one well thought of before the race, began just a bit slowly and was never able to materially improve his position, though he was going well in the stretch to be fourth, a length and a half back of Last Attempt. H. Roseachers Bacciocco, which proved himself at the Tropical Park meeting, came right back with a sparkling effort in the six furlongs of the second race when he won by a wide margin in 1:10, a new track record for the distance. J. D. Norris, Jr.s Tombereau saved the place and Mrs. George U. Harris Knowlton closed a considerable gap. to be third over Black Dove, which raced for Mrs. George W. Loft. Mills, who had the mount on Bacciocco, lost little time in finding his way into the command and setting a sizzling pace, was never headed to be the wjnner by five lengths, though Mills kept right at him to ride out to the victory Parnell Bound was in second place in the early racing, but he soon gave way to Tombereau, and Knowlton, from a slow beginning, found his way into third place. This was the order at the head of the stretch and while Bacciocco drew away at the end, ho was ridden out smartly by Mills to establish the track record. Tombereau stuck to sec Continued on second page. JUDGE SCHILLING BEST .Continued from first page. pnd and beat Knowlton two lengths for that part of the purse. The Summer Skies was a slx-f urlong dash, run as the third race, and it brought out a field of six. H. C. Hatchs French Lass was a handy winner over Desha Brecken-rldges Royal Ruffin. Lullaby IT., from the Howe Stable, saved third from the Brook-meade Stables Raccoon by a narrow margin. Lullaby IT. cut out the running, but French Lass was soon in second place and Riley was content to rate her along within striking distance of the daughter of Ellan-jgowan. Ellice was racing third, while Royal Ruffin was slower to find his racing legs. Rounding into the stretch Lullaby H. showed signs of weakening and there it was that Riley permitted French Lass to run. She quickly ran down the English filly and when safely in the lead she was cased slightly to be- the winner by a length and with plenty in reserve. Royal Ruffin, in the meantime, had closed with a great rush and he also beat Lullaby H. to take the place by a length and a half. - r
