The field of fourteen includes J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom, one of the outstanding juveniles of last year; J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas, the most successful in his division during the current Crescent City season; Spring-steel, S. W. Labrots stake winning homebred; Three Ds Stock Farms Sir Melton and Texas Knight; E. R. Bradlevs Bertjohn; A. Pelleteris Colonial Belle; C. Januskaa Sandwrack, and others of lesser prominence. The stake carries ,000 in added money, and with fourteen starters, will gross ,220, a tidy sum for a race for three-year-olds this early in the year. This feature, designed by racing secretary Julius G. Reeder, is the richest and principal event of the meeting and is taking the place of the Louisiana Derby, now a Fair Grounds headline? oif the Jefferson Park program. LUCKY TOM FAVORITE. Lucky Tom is expected to rule favorite, with Camp Douglas closely pressing him for the honor. Sir Melton and Texas Knight, the Three Ds pair, which will be making their first appearances of the winter, are strongly fancied by close observers, and trainer John F. Schorr has both in tip-top condition for the race. Springsteel, second to Lucky Tom in the Derby Trial Purse, at one mile last Tuesday, will have a big pull in weights over the Robinson colt tomorrow, and many look for the Labrot home-bred to prove the winner. Colonial Belle, the lone filly named to start, is the hope of Orleanians for a local victory, and the good fortune of the E. R. Bradley colors in Derbys at Jefferson Park will be a contributing factor to support for Bertjohn. Horsemen are satisfied that with a fast or good track prevailing, the race will prove one of the best of the winter, and regard the field as one of the most outstanding in this division assembled here in several years.
