WORKMAN HAS TWO WINNERS 1 Star Whitney Eider Wins With Flaming and Apprentice. Ackroyd Handicap Feature of Program at Jamaica — Muddy Track and Chilly Weather Prevail. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 9.— The Ackroyd Handicap was the stellar offering of the Monday program at Jamaica, and this brought out a field of four horses. Jockey R. Workman, astride John McCambridges Flaming, proved an easy winner over Dewey Benthams Martis, while Stormy Dawn, racing for James Butler, was third. The race completed a double for Workman, who previously had guided Apprentice to a driving victory. The race was worth 55 to the winner. A muddy track prevailed, and this brought about several withdrawals from the program. Overhead conditions were clear, but there was an unseasonable chill in the air. The start was a moving one, and Mills had Martis away fast, and he was rating him along steadily. Phanto Rock was in second place, with Flaming and Stormy Dawn lapped on each other. There was no change in the running positions for the first half mile, and, as the field neared the far turn, Workman moved up with Flaming on the outside, while Robertson took the inside with Stormy Dawn. Entering the stretch, Flaming assumed command and opened up a brief lead and then was taken under restraint for the remainder of the journey, holding the others safe. Martis was placed under pressure in the stretch and gained some ground but could not menace the winner, while Stormy Dawn tired suddenly at the finish and was a distant third.
