1 UPSET IN CLEVELAND FEATURE • Minton Leads Throughout in the Cleveland News Handicap. t Light Showers Fail to Affect Going at Bain-bridge Park — Madelon Repeats Recent Good Race. CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 28.— Minton, carrying the Shandon Farm Stable colors, and ridden by jockey R. Morrison, provided the prize upset of the Bainbridge Park meeting when he scored an easy victory over William T. and Lucky Dan in the Cleveland News Handicap, featured race of the half-holiday card this afternoon. Minton was lightly regarded, and returned a handsome dividend. He ran the mile and seventy yards in 1:42%, only a fraction of a second from the track record. After taking command going to the first turn, Minton opened up an easy lead and, setting a fast pace for the entire distance, was never seriously threatened. Merrily On and Madwind followed in closest pursuit of the winner until the far turn was reached. William T. then moved up and outran the others through the stretch. Lucky Dan, coming from behind on the outside in the final furlong, outlasted Merrily On for third. Mad-wind quit badly during the run home. Rain threatened during much of the afternoon and light showers at intervals laid the dust nicely, but the track remained fast. A cold wind swept the course, making top coats a necessity for comfort, but despite the conditions, a surprisingly large crowd witnessed the sport. Although racing easily most of the way in the opening dash, Finger Tips was hard pressed in the final stages to retain a head advantage over Sandy San. The success of the Meehan filly marked the first victory here for R. Morrison. Sandy San made a gallant effort to get to the winner in the final furlong, and was slowly wearing her down. Giblets and Balzar were always close up, and Giblets proved the gamer in the final drive for third. Repeating her previous good performance of earlier in the week, Madelon came with a brilliant rush next to the inner rail in he stretch and overhauled Alamae in the last seventy yards of the second race. Alamae set the pace and held on better today during the final drive. Finishing with good courage on the outside in the stretch run, Captains Daughter headed Friar and Sun B. in the last few strides for third. It was only after a thrilling stretch struggle that Graphite got home a head in front of Kuvera in the third race. Graphite set the pace from the start, but was joined by Kuvera on the far turn. This pair fought it out closely lapped for the remainder of the race and, although Kuvera enjoyed the inside position, Graphite proved the gamer in the final drive. Shaun Padraic held the others safe throughout. Leo Dandurand, Montreal sportsman and partner of Joseph Cattarinich, left Friday night for Chicago and will visit Washington Park before going to Toronto and then home.
