1 ! ; WOODBINE PARK MEETING ENDS | » Tred Avon Wins Toronto Cup Handicap by Narrow Margin. » Frumper Forces Labrot Filly to Limit In Feature Race — Cloudy Weather Conditions Prevail. g TORONTO, Ont, May 28.— Tred Avon, carrying the black and red-bannered racing jacket of Sylvester W. Labrot of Annapolis, Md., and conceding chunks of weight to six other opponents, added to her laurels when she was a driving winner of the Toronto Cup Handicap, the feature of the brilliant program at the Woodbine course of the Ontario Jockey Club for the closing day of the spring meeting. It was the fortieth running of the old race and it was one of the greatest renewals of this historic prize witnessed in several seasons when two others forced the four-year-old gray daughter of Sir Greysteel — La Muiron to give every ounce of her speed to be victorious by the smallest possible margin. Frumper, the greatly improved gelding from the Ryland H. New establishment, gave the Labrot filly plenty of contention to earn the second part of the purse, while Khorasan, from the Seagram Stable, took third place from Pardee of the Belair Stud. Soil Gill", another Seagram colt, finished before Scuttle, carrying A. C. Bostwicks colors. Rideaway was the other starter, but he eliminated himself when he wheeled directly after the barrier was released. Tred Avon, winner of the King Edward Cup Handicap, was installed a top heavy choice for the Toronto Cup and, carrying her weight in handy fashion, raced along under reserve while Sol Gills and Pardee raced closely lapped to lead the way. Frumper was heading the Labrot filly, while Khorasan was going along in advance of Scuttle and racing smoothly. Soil Gills and his pursuer continued in the van to the far turn. There both fell back, while Tred Avon, on the outside, and Frumper, securing racing room on the inside, readily moved up to displace the leaders. Khorasan was also moving up and on the stretch turn all three had overtaken the pacemakers. Tred Avon took first place and, waging a furious finish the length of the home stretch, received the verdict, while Khorasan was two and one-half lengths back to save third. Cloudy overhead conditions and a track that was left in slow condition from rain that fell during the past few days, failed to check the fans from attending the closing of the Ontario Jockey Club spring meeting. A large crowd took in the final day of the meeting and, with a trio of features to give entertainment along with four other well balanced races, those that witnessed the decision of the various contests were well repaid. This saw Shady Well, bearing the silks of the Sea- gram Stable, accounting for the twenty-third running of this old prize in a drive. Pat Gaiety, from the T. M. Glassco barn, landed in second place, while Young Kitty, another *4 member of the Seagram Stable, after setting the pace, stuck it out to easily save the short end of the spoils. The William Hendrie Memorial was listed as the fourth race, and some delay occurred at the barrier before a good start was effected. Young Kitty, winner of this event in 1929, was sent out by Legere to show the way and Kurtsinger elected to follow her stable mate, while Fragrant Gift went along in third place, just before Aymond and the others in rather close order. Yourj Kitty held command until reaching the stretch turn. Kurtsinger, on Shady Well, was going along well In back of the veteran mare. Home-bred juveniles matched strides in the Alexandra Plate, under allowance condi- tions, and the result was a surprise when Happy Hopes, from the R. S. McLaughlin stable, emerged victorious over the well- backed odds-on choice, Pensweep, from the H. C. Hatch stable, with J. C. Fletchers Heap Good chasing the pair home, to lead W. H. Wrights Kings Bounty and three others.
