BELMONT STAKES STARTERS , At Least Nine to Compete in Valuable Old Established Event. 9 Flag Pole Works Sensationally, Covering i Mile and a Half in 2:31%— Gusto Goes Same Distance in 2:33. , 1 NEW YORK, N. Y.. June 1— At this time there is every reason to expect that at least y nine will be sent to the post in the famous old Belmont Stakes, at one mile and a half, at Belmont Park Saturday. It will be one of the largest fields that ever raced for tlK old prize, and prospects are bright that it j will result in an excellent contest. Edward R. Bradleys Burgoo King, win- , ner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preak- | ness, does not enjoy the engagement, nor does Walter M. Jeffords Withers winner. Boatswain. As the probable field shapes up I at this time, it is expected these will be i raced: William Woodwards Faireno, the i Brookmeade Stables Flag Pole, W. R. Coes i Osculator, Marshall Fields Villon, Howe 1 Stables Sansarica, Mereworth Studs Mad I Pursuit, Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sunmelus, i Morton L. Schwartz Gusto and L. Sindlers Jimmy Sutro. There may be additions to this list, but it is expected each one of these will be seen under silks. Of all these it is Flag Pole, the son of American Flag, a winner of the same clas- j sic, that has attracted the most attention by his trials. This colt does not enjoy as many engagements as some other good ones, and he is a comparatively recent development, j but all through his preparation for the Belmont he has attracted attention. "Bob" Smith had him out yesterday morning for a final over the full mile and a half distance, and his showing was sensational when he finished out the distance handily in 2:31%. After running a first half in :48%, he covered the second half in :52%. That took him to the mile mark in 1:41%. Then what made the trial so sensational was that the fifth quarter was run in :24%, to reach the mile and a quarter in 2:06, and the final quarter was run in :25%, to complete the mile and a half in 2:31%. Max Hirsch also had Morton L. Schwartz Gusto out for a mile and a half trial, and he gave an excellent account of himself when he finished the distance in 2:33. He ran the first half in :51, second in :52, to reach the mile in 1:43. The mile and a quarter was covered in 2:08%, and he finished out strongly when he had completed the long test in 2:33. Mad Pursuit, which sulked in a recent trial, had a mile as his task. This time the son of Mad Hatter went along cheerfully and ran in 1:40%. He is fit and ready for the mile and a half gallop, and his showing depends upon his temper, which is decidedly uncertain.
