I APRIL THE FIFTH IS j I SURPRISE WINNER OF THE EPSOM DERBY j I EPSOM DOWNS, England, June 1— The great Orwell failed and April the Fifth, an outsider, was the winner of the one hundred ] and fifty-third renewal of the Epsom Derby before a shouting throng of probably half a million persons. April the Fifth, owned and trained by Tom Walls, an actor, raced through the stretch like a brown streak under the flailing whip of Fred Lane and finished three-quarters of ■ a a length in front of the Aga Khans Dastur, drawing away. Lord Roseberrys Miracle was only a head farther back. In fourth * place came Royal Dancer, with Firdaussi be- I hind him. Washington M. G. Singers Or- 1 well, the prohibitive favorite at 5 to 4, finished ninth. i Orwell carried the hopes and the pounds and shillings of the vast majority of Brit- • ishers at home and abroad. The race was attended not only by the vast throng here 1 on the Downs, headed by the King and 1 Queen and all the royal family, but was followed overseas by millions who listened to ! the description by radio or gathered in front I of newspaper offices for the flash of the | winner. It was a typical Derby Day crowd and one I of the largest in nearly a century and a : half of the race. English men and women of i every degree, from royalty to coster and I gypsy, made holiday on the Downs, open and I free to all.
