RICH HAVRE DE GRACE HANDICAP TO EQUIPOISE C. V. Whitneys Champion Adds to His Laurels and Money Winnings Displays Remarkable Speed and Stamina in Defeating Gallant Sir, Tred Avon and Ten Others in Havres Closing Day Feature HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Oct. 1. In easily defeating the finest field of. thorough-breds assembled, this season in the Havre de Grace Handicap, before close to twenty thousand persons here this afternoon, Cornelius Whitneys Equipoise again proved himself champion. The four-year-old son of Pennant and Swinging, carrying the highest impost of 128 pounds, came within one-fifth of a second of the tracks mile and a furlong record of 1:50 in defeating Northway Stables Gallant Sir by a length. S. W. Labrots Tred Avon was third, three lengths back of the California colt and the same distance ahead of Foxcatcher Farms White Clover II. Thirteen three-year-olds and older horses representing all the outstanding distance runners now in training, with the exception of Twenty Grand and Plucky Play, which were late scratches, faced starter James Milton, thereby giving Equipoise a net winning prize of 1,250. This sum increased his total earning for this year to 04,875 and for three seasons of racing to 64,710. Incidentally it also increased, the Whitneys total for the year to 42,815. LONG DELAY AT POST. In addition to his concessions of weight, Equipoise also had to overcome the disadvantages of a nine-minute delay at the post, principally caused by himself, and the outside position at the barrier, where he was placed when he would not enter his stall near the inside. Equipoises performance was far different from his start last Saturday when he was last in a six furlongs event won by Pairbypair. He gave freely of his speed, doing everything asked of him by jockey Workman at all points of the race and taking the lead so cleverly at the top of the stretch that he was able to finish out the race under stout restraint. In doing all his running on the outside, Equipoise was clear of all interference and the job of overcoming the ground he lost on the turns did not bother him. Workman had the Whitney colt going strongly right from the start in an effort to get a good position at the club house bend. Gallant Sir and Jack High showed the most early speed and the latter took a half length lead around the curve. R. Jones had Tred Avon going well under a snug hold in third position, while Dark Secret was fourth and Helianthus fifth, the latter three well grouped. WINS UNDER RESTRAINT. Equipoise was at the last named colts heels. As Gallant Sir opened up a clear lead in the run down the back stretch, Workman kept Equipoise going at a good pace and the favorite had moved into third place by a short margin over Tred Avon at the half mile ground. Jack High was still in second position. Dark Secret had dropped out of it and Helianthus was fifth, with Clock Tower sixth. Equipoise continued his long striding around the second turn, so that at the entrance to the stretch he was lapped on the leading Gallant Sir and only a short distance ahead of Jack High and Tred Avon. Workman took no chances and sent Equipoise into a clear lead in the stretch, but inside the furlong pole he started looking back for any further danger and, not seeing any, he put the Pennant colt under restraint, increasing his hold as the distance to the finish was reduced. Otherwise Equipoise would have beaten off Gallant Sir and broken the track record. Gallant Sir, althbugh outclassed by the winner, was clearly best of the others as Steffen kept him going to his utmost. Tred Avon finished very gamely to take third by herself and White Clover II. came from far back to be fourth ahead of the tiring Jack High. Then followed Charleigh, Late Date, Mate, St. Brideaux, Clock Tower, Helianthus, Her Grace and Dark Secret in the order named. The Northway Stable colt maintained a stiff pace throughout, going to the quarter in :23, the half mile in :46and and the three-quarters in 1:11. With Equipoise in com- Continued on thirteenth page.. Crusader and Cudgel, both winners of the event, are joint holders of the record: Equipoises was the third victory in Whitney eton blue and brown silks. The track record for the mile and seventy yards fell in the running of the Belair Purse, the secondary feature, when W. R. Coes vastly-improved Osculator covered the dis- tance in 1:41. Bobby Jones guided Osculator to his new record, reserving his mount in second place, back of Rehoboth, during the opening three-quarters.. Semaphore was third during this part of the race and Mad Frump brought up the rear. The field closed up at the far turn, where Osculator began his challenge of the leader. He was successful in putting away Rhoboth at the quarter post, but both Semaphore and Mad Frump were charging up strongly on the outside.
