TECHNIQUE VICTORIOUS IN BREEDERS FUTURITY and WHITNEY ENTRY FAILS The Darb Second and Caterwaul Third at Latonia. 0dds-0n Favorites Disappoint Thou, sands of Admirers Jimmy Moran Makes It Two Straight. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 15. Technique, a Kentucky-owned and bred filly, checked two of the smartest colts of the season in their quest of the championship laurels when she decisively defeated C. V. Whitneys The Darb and Caterwaul, along with six other juveniles, carrying H. P. Headleys blue and white colors to victory in the thirty-third renewal of the Breeders Futurity at Latonia today. A great crowd witnessed the triumph of the speedy daughter of Supremus and Cho Cho and it was a victory that added 5,099 to her earnings and first for the Headley silks in this prized fixture, which has been renewed annually since its first running at Lexington in 1910. Speeding over the futurity course of about 170 feet less than three-quarters of a mile on a fast track in 1:10, Technique won by. three lengths and with little left a3 Harvey Elston, her rider, took no chances arid rode her out briskly until safely past the finish. The defeat of the Whitney entry was disappointing to thousands in the crowd for they were backed with confidence and sent to the post at odds-on. Those who supported the winner, which was coupled in the beeting with Liqueur, received .22 for each . AMAZING SPEED. With the exception of Charley O., all of the starters were away with almost amazing swiftness and for the first quarter it was almost impossible to separate the leaders. Ocean Flight, Technique, Liqueur and The Darb were the tightly-grouped leaders. At the turn, however, there developed a general loosening up, with the winner rushing to the fore, followed by The Darb. Here Liqueur was in third place and Old Baldy fourth, with only a short advantage over Caterwaul, which was following a course well out in the track. When straightened up in the stretch the Headley filly came on smartly and steadily increased her lead as The Darb continued too well for the others. After reaching the final three-sixteenths Caterwaul supplanted Old Baldy in third position, but about a half dozen lengths back of the leader and when covering the remaining ground was unable to reduce that margin. Misguide outfin-ished Old Baldy in the late stages, while Liqueur retired into more decisive defeat. The winner carried 119 pounds, three less than The Darb and eight less than was packed by Caterwaul. Earnings of the two Whitney colts amounted to ,606, of which ,404 represented second money. The fourth horse accounted for 15 and nominators of the first three shared ,000, of which 00 went to Mr. Headley, who named the queenly winner last July 1. IDEAL DAY FOR SPORT. It was an ideal day for the sport, with almost unseasonable warmth and a generous flood of sunshine during the early afternoon. Scores of visitors and hundreds of enthusiasts prominent in the social, business and political life of Greater Cincinnati were in the large gathering. Jimmy Moran came through with his second winning performance in as many starts during the meeting and fifth in but eleven engagements this year when he defeated Sazerac, Brown Wisdom, Thistle Ann and Stop Gap in the Twin Oak Golf Purse, fourth on the card and the second best offering. Favored by a comparatively slow early pace by Brown Wisdom, the victor charged to the front under the M. Goldblatt colors entering the stretch and continuing gamely to tht- end withstood Sazerac, which raced determinedly in the final run to the finish and bowed to the winner by only a length. After being headed by the winner, Brown Wisdom tired badly and the finish found him two and one-half lengths back of Sazerac. Brown Wisdom was the popular choice and found such backing that he went to the post at odds-on. It was his first start here. Continued on second page.J WHITNEY ENTRY FAILS Continued from first page. C. W. Moore furnished the winner of the three-quarters second race in his home-bred three-year-old Essential. The son of Sweep On registered in a driving finish, with Most Wise second, a half length back and only a like margin before Sis Agnes. The latter was the favorite and but for a bit of adverse luck, particularly at the turn, where she was in close quarters, might have been the winner. The winner was handled by G. Arnold. Failure of Pot au Brooms, which attracted strong backing, to get going in good fashion, somewhat marred the third race, or Park Hills Purse, but Pot au Brooms misfortune was no fault of starter Hamiltons, as the son of Pot au Feu came out of the starting stalls only to prop after taking a few strides. The race, the second at three-quarters for maiden two-year-old colts and geldings, resulted in a victory for C. W. Bidwills Bichloride, with Le Ministre second and Thistle Tom third. Again the finish was a driving one, with the winner having only a head over Le Ministre at the finish. Largely as a result of their repeated bumping during the running, Simon and Popo failed to figure prominently. F. Howell has only one horse, the. filly Reverberate, for racing under R. C. Thatchers silks here. F. P. Letellier has taken over to train for his brother, A. B. Letellier, the useful Saz-erac, Dixie Lad and Green Wave and also is handling Nest Egg for Junius W. Bell. "
