! LOWER FAIRMOUNT TAX I i IMPERATIVE, SAYS EDDY i I COLLINSVILLE, 111., Oct. 15. General manager Robert S. Eddy of the Fairmount Jockey Club issued the following statement at the conclusion of the twenty-five day 1 autumn meeting this afternoon; "Artistically, the meeting was entirely satisfactory, but financially it was a huge disappointment. "Our losses reached such a figure that we cannot hope to continue under the same conditions. This is a beautiful race plant, the people of the St. Louis area seem to want racing, but it is impossible to operate successfully here when we have to pay ,500 a day to the state for license. Unless that fee is reduced the future of racing at Fair-1 mount Park is extremely dark. "We might have a chance to make ends meet when business conditions generally are good, but in slack times such as these it is like bucking ones head against a brick wall. There were days during the meeting when the play in the mutuels was so small that our percentage did not meet our purse expenditures. It does not require much figuring to convince one that to continue under such conditions would be foolish. It cannot be done."
