MEETING AT JAMAICA ENDS Semsen Handicap Again Final Feature on Long Island. Quel Jeu Gives Brilliant Performance Over Three-Quarters Distance Kerry Patch Finishes Third. NEW YORK, N. Y.F Oct. 15. The Remsen Eandicap, inaugurated in 1904 and the final fixture on Long Island for two years, was decided at Jamaica this afternoon before a large and enthusiastic crowd. Quel Jeu, racing for the Arden Farms and ridden by Jackie Long, was a driving winner over H. C. Phipps Balios, while Lee Rosenbergs Kerry Patch was third before Dominus, from the Belair Stud, but coupled in the calculations with Balios. The only withdrawals from the overnight entry list were Little Lad and Hell Diver. The Remsen carried a value of ,000 and netted the winning owner ,425. Quel Jeu turned in a smart performance over the six furlongs distance. He set his own pace from the start and ran the distance in 1:11. There was scant delay at the post and when the start was effected Long had Quel Jeu in motion, while Kerry Patch dwelt slightly and was slow to settle in his stride. Quel Jeu displayed fine speed in the early stages and Long made every use of this gift. Balios was racing in nearest pursuit, while Dominus was leading Kerry Patch. On the turns Quel Jeu was placed under a strong "pull" to keep him from bearing out and then Balios made up some ground. When straightened out in the stretch, Quel Jeu drew away. In the meantime Kerry Patch had moved up on the outside of the leaders and on the turn for home Malley, astride Dominus, allowed his mount to bear out. This forced Kerry Patch to go extremely wide and ruined whatever chance he might have had. In the run through the final furlong Balios gained steadily on the leader and in a drive to the finish was beaten by a neck. Kerry Patch was a long distance back of the placed horse. Ideal fall weather prevailed, and an attractive card of six races furnished keen racing for the crowd. The track was fast. Glidelia accounted for the October Claiming Handicap of ,000 in handy fashion and completed a double for the New York sportsman John J. Robinson and jockey Pascuma. Glidelia showed the way to C. V. Whitneys. Clotho, while Fred E. Krafts Hibala was third before Pardee, from the Belair Stud. The race was at one mile and a sixteenth, for three-year-olds and over, under a 0,000 claiming contract. Pascuma won the race when he assumed command on the first turn when Clotho went wide. From then on the daughter of Lucullite Delia dominated the" race, withstood determined opposition from Hibala and at the end had a safe margin over Clotho, with something in reserve. Clotho under more vigorous handling could have been closer up at the finish. Bernius allowed his mount to lose considerable ground going wide on the first turn. Hibala, which made a determined effort on the far turn, tired suddenly in the stretch run, as if short, and tired badly. The official confirmation of the second race was delayed for several minutes due to an accident in which Gloria Maris figured. Jockey Wholey was unseated after the finish due to a broken stirrup leather. He escaped with a slight shaking up but decided to walk back to the scales instead of driving back in the machine. The winner of the race was Portam, ridden by Mills, which had a safe margin at the finish over Gloria Marls, while Thoughts was third. The winner outran his field from the start, was rated along under steady restraint, and drew away at the end. Gloria Maris made a determined bid entering the stretch, but was not good enough, while Thoughts came from the rear to wear down The Crane in the last strides. J. J. Murphy Is laid up with a touch of la grippe and in his absence J. L. Donovan saddled Old Honesty. T. M. Cassidy returned from Montreal, where he spent the last few days on busing.
