LAUREL PARK TURF NOTES 8 6 The best program offered on a state track this fall is on tap Saturday. It will be run over a fast track as a high wind, aided by Old Sol, was drying up the course. Track superintendent Woods Dickerson put a big force of workmen on the track as soon as work hour ended Friday morning and, unless more rain appears, the course will be at its best. Saturdays running of the 5,000 Washington Handicap is the nineteenth. It was inaugurated in 1911, with S. J. Johnson being the winner. Sfnce then, The Manager, Lahor, Roamer, Gainer, Boots, King Neptune, Midway, Oceanic, Rialto, Big Blaze, Joy Smoke, Mars, Display, Mike Hall, Sun Beau, twice, and Clock Tower have been the winners in the order named. Walter J. Salmons Display, winner in 1927, holds the time record of 2:02. If the course is fast Saturday, a new time record may be made as Equipoise and Plucky Play, co-favorites for the race, are ready and capable of bettering Displays figure. The Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap, ccr f eature with the Washington, will have its fifth running. Twink was the initial winner in 1928, with Sun Craig, Mate and Oscu-lator capturing first money in the succeeding years. Mate holds the time record of 1:38. This mark is in danger if Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Archer gets a fast track to prance over and anything carries him along at a fast clip the first three-quarters of a mile. Harvey Elston left for Latonia, Ky., where he is carded to ride Hal Price Headleys Technique Saturday. If the track is muddy and Technique fails to start, Elston will pilot the Brookmeade Stables Caesars Ghost. He will be back on the job Monday at Pimlico. Trainer George Conway will ship the Glen Riddle Farms horses over to Pimlico. After, seeing them put away he will go down to Berlin, Md., with jockey Johnny Gilbert to work a big band of yearlings. Jockey A. Robertson wired from New York that he was leaving for Latonia to ride C. V. Whitneys The Darb Saturday, but would report Monday at Pimlico. Phil Reuter has made arrangements to ship his horses to Pimlico tomorrow. Harry Dabson, a Maryland lad, who has been showing nice form since coming here from Canada, is endeavoring to sign with some stable going to a winter track. He can do 102 pounds and will have his apprentice allowance until next spring. Dr. C. M. Henderson, well known veterinarian of Canada, is due at Pimlico Monday. W. E. Charles was an arrival from Latonia, Ky., with Sun Gros, one that will start in the Jenkins. Charles is also bringing up Major Lanphier for the sport, which opens Monday at Pimlico. Jockey Bobby Jones was the recipient Friday of many messages of congratulations. It was his twenty-first birthday and his mother and dad wired from San Francisco, Calif. , Jones has been riding eight years on recognized tracks in this country.
