FINAL WEEK AT COVINGTON Latonia Cup Next Saturday Head- : liner of Closing Program. s Most Popular of Covington Races Run as Overnight Event This Year Closes Thursday. - LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 5. The current Latonia meeting goes into the final week Monday, and with the close next Saturday, Kentucky and the central west will see no more racing until next year. The concluding week may bring much interesting "getaway" sport, climaxing in the Latonia Cup Handicap of ,000 added, and to be run Saturday over two miles ..nd one quarter. On other of the remaining few days racing secretary W. H. Shelley hopes to lure under colors the best in all divisions, and with anything like a break in track conditions, success should crown his efforts. Good weather also would permit attendance to return to maximum proportions as the wet and dreary weather of the past week kept many away, and with some sunny weather enthusiasts are sure to turn out for the closing week, always the biggest part of any Latonia season. The Latonia Cup is open to three-year-olds and older horses, and entries will not close until Thursday with weights and acceptances at the usual time Friday morning. Previously the Cup was an early closing event, but with the added value reduced, it was believed best to run it along "overnight" lines, thus obtaining the best available material on the grounds. At its present lower value it will not attract the leading distance performers in the East, but should make for a good contest engaging "home" talent. When more prosperous days return, its former value is to be restored, as it is without question Latonias most popular race, the Latonia Derby and Latonia Championship, not excepted. The Cup last year was won by Culloden, with Cousin Jo second and Royal Julian third. The latter scored in the 1930 renewal, and may be among the starters in Saturdays twenty-seventh running. Others being groomed for the long grind include Cee Tee, which was seen in the Championship Stakes Saturday; La Feria, Border Warrant, Boys Howdy, Tela, Englewood, Brass Monkey, Come On, Easy, Manta, Quando and others. Harry Gilmore triumphed in the first Cup back in 1884, but this winning was somewhat overshadowed by the dead heat of Tax Gatherer and Levant for second. In 1885 the race was run as the Brewers Cup, and resulted in a victory for Bob Miles, and ; the next year Irish Pat won through the disqualification of Hidalgo, which was set : back to second after finishing in front. At one mile and three-quarters, Fosteral won from Kaloolah OFallon and others in 1887, which marked the last running of a race of this type here until 1910, when it was revived as the Endurance Stakes and run at two miles. . Cintrella accounted for the revival running, and Star Charter bested a smart field in 1911, which marked the second and final staging as the Endurance Stakes at two miles. Since 1912 the race has been run under its present name, and at two miles and one-quarter. Winners since 1912 were . Rudolfo, Sir Catesby, Lady Errant, Star Jas- mine, Pif Jr. twice, Moscowa, Extermina- tor, Be Frank, H. E. Coleman, Radio, Chaco-let, Altawood, Deeming, Percussion, Mike 1 Hall twice, Ben Machree, Royal Julian and Culloden. As a three-year-old in 1927, Mike Hall hung up a worlds record of 3:48 as he crashed through for his first of two tri-umphs in successive runnings. 1
