ERECH dashed into contention on the first turn and, coming fast in the best going through the stretch, wore down VERMONT ROSE. The latter raced to the front early, but tired badly in the last sixteenth. PICKARD was blocked on the far turn. FIRST MORTGAGE could not keep up. MARCEITA was crowded on the far turn. BECKONED, away slowly, tired. WILD WAVES bore out badly on the first turn. MELTING POT dashed up early, then tired in the stretch. 3 •SATJ. SECOND RACE— Spreckels Course 170 feet less than 3-4 mile. JUGBAND, close to the pace from the start, took a clear lead near the stretch turn and drew out easily near the end. JUDGE BUD showed improvement. HILDUR ROCK tired near the end. TIMBUS lacked early speed. FAIR MOLE raced fairly well. LEADER dropped far out of it after the start. WEE DROP. tired badly. BROADWAY CALL dwelt at the start. Scratched— 60642 War Over, 108. BOOTTOP, showing great improvement on the slow track, was shuffled back early, but came fast when clear and held BAPTISTE safe. The latter was shuffled back to last place early, then closed much ground. RITTER overtook KING AT ARMS near the stretch turn and took a good lead, then tired in the stretch. HALF SAINT could not keep up. KING AT ARMS tired suddenly after taking a good lead in the first quarter. DEL WELLES propped at the start and was never a serious contender. LAMP BLACK set the pace under restraint and held on well when challenged. AL JOLSON. racing on the outside, showed a good performance. GOLDEN SUN tired after challenging LAMP BLACK on the stretch turn. PEGGY J. dropped back after the start and »as never a factor. Scratched— 80659 Hidden Gold, 102; 80347 Jennie Gal, 108.
