ANOTHER BROOKMEADE STAR Black Gift Shows Brilliant Speed Winning at Jamaica Small Juvenile Defeats Good Band in Great Neck Pufse at New York Course Large Crowd Present NEW YORK N Y May 10 Trainer Bob Smith sent out the winner of the best offering of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today when he saddled Mrs Isa belle Dodge Sloanes Black Gift to have him win the Great Neck 1urse This was a five furlongs dash and the little black colt had to race it in 59 to carry the popular Brookmeade Stable silks to victory AW Abbotts winter performer Hilise raced to second place and Mrs C Oliver Iselins Evangelist at a big weight disadvantage saved third from Sailor Beware a newcomer from the Greentree Stable In his previous race Black Gift had fin ¬ ished fourth to Stainforth Psychic Bid and Try Sympathy in the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre de Grace after meeting with much interference In this winning effort the little fellow outrun to the stretch came with a mighty rush to make the fast time and importanceIt he moved into new importance It was an interesting day of sport fur ¬ nished for a big crowd and while the weather was still uncomfortably chilly there was sportWith much interest in the sport With little delay at the post in the Great Neck the start was a good one and while Garner got Black Gift away in the lead the colt almost at once ran into trouble as the others swarmed on him and he dropped back badly Sailor Beware showing a burst of speed took command but was closely at ¬ tended by Hilise and the pair quickly went into a long lead over the others Evangelist was third and he in turn was two lengths before Black Gift GiftThe The order was maintained to the stretch turn and there Sailor Beware began to show signs of tiring but Hilise carried on gamely and Evangelist was still in the running Garner had taken Black Gift to the outside to find room and while it cost some ground it was a wise move as the black charged along with ample room A furlong out he had dropped third place but he was still two lengths back of Hilise HiliseIn In that final furlong under a powerful ride by Garner Black Gift continued to close until he was on by to win going away by a length and a half Hilise had saved second place by two lengths and Evangelist beat Sailor Beware by a length and a half for third John C Clarks Vera Cruz earned a close decision in the opening dash at five fur ¬ longs which was for maiden juveniles All Aflame a son of Big Blaze that raced ifor Samuel D Riddle was well lapped on him at the finish and Mrs John Hertz Our Reigh took third from Col Greene As the race was run it appeared that All Aflame is destined not to long remain a maiden for he was closing with a rush that would have made him winner within a few more strides With more education it is entirely possible he will take a place among the good opes rav ravSpoilt Spoilt Beauty from the B B Stable proved best of the cheap sprinters that raced in the second a six furlongs affair After setting all the pace she scored by a good margin over H H Bowmans Davoc and G C Winfreys Impromptu was a close third Spoilt Beauty carried Prospect Park along at a fast pace in the early stages andwhen the stretch was reached she shook him off handily though Jones took no chances and roused her sharply with the whip in the stretch At the end her winning margin was four lengths Davoc was outrun to the stretch but thereafter under the vigorous riding of Coucci steadily made up ground and running past the others in the final furlong was second
