Trainer Smith So Decides After Cavalcades Fast Trial at Jamaica High Quest Also Works Impressively and Will Also AlsoCarry Carry the Brookmeade Stable Colors in inSaturdays Saturdays Big Race BALTIMORE Md May 10 Final word relative to the designs on the coming Preakness by Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane who has won a Florida Derby this year with Time Clock a Chesapeake Stakes and a Kentucky Derby with Cavalcade and a Wood Memorial with High Quest came to ¬ day in a private wire from Robert A Smith the Brookmeade trainer Smith telegraphed that High Quest Cavalcade and Anarchy would leave New York tomorrow and that if they shipped satisfactorily and did well after their arrival at Pimlico all three would take the track Saturday in the re ¬ newal of the Maryland Jockey Clubs Preak ¬ ness Stakes a gallop of one mile and three sixteenths for threeyearolds which will have an added money value of 25000 and very likely pay its winner all of that thatMrs Mrs Sloane and Smith have come to the conclusion that it would be more than folly to neglect to take a chance with a horse that has shown as much as Cavalcade did in the Chesapeake and the Kentucky Derby for the rich Preakness while Cavalcade is at top form High Quest which hasnt been as highly tried this year may not be the colt they think And it is no cinch that Cavalcade can be kept in winning condition for the American Derby the Arlington Clas ¬ sic and late engagements Horses are flesh and blood They can sicken and die over ¬ night and they have a way of keeping perfectly well and still suddenly going off form that bewilders the smartest trainers The Maryland racing public is in absolute agreement with the fair owner and the newlytitled trainer of the Kentucky Derby winner in all this and on top of that wants to have another look at Cavalcade Smith wires that his decision to start Cavalcade provided the Englishbred colt ships satis ¬ factorily does not mean that he is not sat ¬ isfied with High Quest He is still confi ¬ dent that High Quest is better than any other threeyearold in America after Cav ¬ alcade and he is not certain he cant trim the Derby winner Last fall he was sure that High Quest was the better colt coltAnarchy Anarchy is a son of Brooms and Fracas Continued on twentysixth page NEW YORK N Y May 10 Cavalcade and High Quest will carry the Brookmeade Stable colors in the Preakness Stakes Satur ¬ day at Pimlico Trainer Bob Smith so de ¬ cided after watching Cavalcade fly over the training track in a trial Smith stated that Cavalcade is at his top form at present and there is no reason why the Derby victor should not try and equal the double honors held by Sir Barton Gallant Fox and Burgoo King KingCavalcade Cavalcade was called upon for a mile and a furlong trial over the training track and he was to be accompanied by Anarchy The Derby winner was ridden by Mack Garner and had his weight up He was full of run and ran away at a fast pace He was timed the first half mile in 49 and the three quarters in 115 In the meantime he had drawn away two lengths from Anarchy and going to the seven furlong pole was caught in 128 The first mile was covered in 141 and then trainer Smith began waving Garner to slow him down Cavalcade kept on at the same pace and finished out in 154 well in hand handHe He cooled out nicely and then High Quest was led out This fellow was also ridden by Garner and he went the first part a trifle faster The first four furlongs were timed in 47 the six furlongs in 114 and then trainer Smith glancing at his watch de ¬ cided he was going a trifle too fast The mile was covered in 142 and through the final furlong he was waved down to a much slower pace and finished out in 155 155The The horses will be shipped to Pimlico by express and then transferred from the car to the track by van Trainer Smith will bill them to Mt Washington which is the near ¬ est shipping point to the track trackSmith Smith left last night so as to be on hand to meet them as they unload Garner will handle Cavalcade in the race while Duke Belizzi will have the mount on High Quest Following the running of the Pimlico feature the horses will be returned to Belmont Park ParkWhile While Cavalcade High Quest and Anarchy are all to be shipped to Pimlico this morn ¬ ing by Bob Smith the trainer of the Derby winner yesterday would not make a definite promise just what his selection would be for the big prize prizeIt It will be time enough for me to make up my mind when the horses reach Pimlico he said It is a four hour trip to Baltimore and the horses will be at the track before one oclock and that will be time enough for me to make a decision I will probably send two after the prize and they will likely be Cavalcade and High Quest but it is not a promise If I send them both I expect to finish first and second KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER TO START IN PREAKNESS Continued from first page He showed so much last June Smith named him for the Saratoga Special revival set for midAugust The Saratoga Special is Ameri ¬ cas most sportsmanlike race of annual re ¬ vival There is no added money The only contribution of the Saratoga Association to the owner of the winner is some gold plate Trainers rarely fail to put the best young ¬ sters of subscribers in the Special because they have until June 15 to decide Anarchy did not turn out as well as Smith hoped ap ¬ parently when the colt was named for the Special but Anarchy won two of seven races and wintered flatteringly with High Quest Time Clock Cavalcade and two score other Brookmeade campaigners at Mrs Dodge Sloanes fine place at Columbia S C CIn In the first race at Havre de Grace in which Cavalcade started an overnight con ¬ test of one mile and seventy yards he was pacemaker for about seven furlongs He is a good looker and home bred bredIf If Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery the Kentucky Derby contender worked for the Preakness today he did it at Sagamore Farm where dockers are not wanted The only possible starters that worked at Pim lico were Swiftsport which turned in a mile in 147 and Snappy Story which sprinted six furlongs in 116 Both were in hand
