KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER TO START IN PREAKNESS VICTORY FOR TICK ON Carries Bradleys Colors Into First Place at Louisville Golden Way Performs in Dull Fash ¬ ion Rain Before Post Time Has No Effect on Track LOUISVILLE Ky May 10 With Golden Way Joseph E Wideners stakes winner performing in dull fashion and far below his race of six days before Edward R Brad leys Tick On romped to victory in the Jack D Robinson Memorial Purse in honor of the memory of the late Louisville turf writer and the feature race at Churchill Downs today Golden Way which opened an almost equal choice with the winner but ap ¬ parently drew little of the stronger backing as Tick On yielded but three to five fin ¬ ished third William Sachsenmaiers three yearold Indian Salute taking secondary laurels laurelsOnly Only two others Miss Kentucky which was hopelessly outclassed and Exponent which bolted when leading the field out of the chute and as a consequence eliminated himself saw action in the feature sprint sprintAfter After Exponent darted to the outside fence Golden Way and Tick On staged a seesaw affair from the threequarters post to the head of the stretch where the win ¬ ner went to the front and on to victory as his rider pleased Within a few strides of the finish Indian Salute forced the Wide ner fouryearold out of second place to fin ¬ ish six lengths away from the victor victorTick Tick On ridden by Don Meade carried 107 pounds five less than the younger Indian Salute and nine under Golden Way In their previous meeting which was Golden Ways first start of the year the Widener colt giving eleven pounds to the Bradley horse gave him the strongest kind of a battle for second honors back of Open Hearth The latter ran the mile of that race in 136 and Tick On galloped it in onefifth of a second faster time today It was his first victory in the Bradley colors and first since his juvenile year He was purchased from Mrs L G Kaufman by his present owner after he had gone amiss early in 1932 his three yearold year yearCHANGEABLE CHANGEABLE WEATHER WEATHERAlthough Although some rain fell shortly before racing time a crowd of good proportions was on hand The rain had no effect on the track Later the skies cleared and the sun which has everything in this section well parched was very much in evidence the remainder of the afternoon N NAl Al Sabaths Norman D an outstanding favorite raced home in front of seven other threeyearolds in the opening race Wise Dream which alone was good enough to run along in advance of the winner in the early stages was second two lengths back and half a length before Babeson The gither and Scrip Money were closest up of the others othersWhen When ready in the stretch the winner under a confident and welljudged ride by Charles Corbett quickly overtook Wise Dream and though inclined to loaf after Continued on twentysixth page VICTORY FOR TICK ON Continued from first page going to the front was kept going well enough to score decisively decisivelyGobet Gobet the choice and ridden by Lee Hardy in the W H Whitehouse colors gradauted with a lucky victory over Needle Phyllis C and eight other maiden twoyearold fillies in the second race Considerable crowding largely brought about by the winner marked the contest over four and onehalf furlongs furlongsSoon Soon after the start the winner which started from number six position bore over forcing Needle Solette and Edith W info a bad tangle and when clear they were far out of the real racing In the stretch Needle made up many lengths losing a victory she deserved by half a length Phyllis C was a strong factor after the first quarter and Amazement gave a fine performance from a sluggish start at the outside of the large field fieldMrs Mrs Frank Swains Just Buck the third choice led home the shorter priced Night Jasmine and Pantaloons along with five others in the second race A whirlwind rush in the stretch won for the victor Lee Hum ¬ phries driving him from behind Ballyhoo Pantaloons and Night Jasmine to victory by a length over the latter filly which was out for the first time since the Hawthorne August meeting meetingOutbreaking Outbreaking the four that opposed him over four and a half furlongs in the fourth race Sam Fursts Good Aim led all the way to score his maiden victory by two lengths Brindle Polly Rita and Piping Hot all win ¬ ners were second third and fourth as named with Athanette also a maiden com ¬ pleting the field
