ALTMARK BY A NOSE Captures Joliet Handicap in Close and Spectacular Finish Outlasts Loggia in Hard Last Eighth EighthBattle Battle Threatening Weather WeatherSmall Small Attendance AURORA May 10 Altmark tempera ¬ mental performer which races for Butsy Hernandez was in good humor today and instead of standing at the post which he has done in his last two races he broke with the others and then to vindicate the judgment of those who backed him into a strong favorite last out won the Joliet Han ¬ dicap from a select band of sprinters over the five and onehalf furlongs course He carried his impost of 105 pounds and jockey J Hernandez into first place when he nosed out Joseph Cattarinichs Loggia which fin ¬ ished a length and onehalf in advance of the faltering Gaillardia The latter was third a nose in front of Wise Eddie Be ¬ hind the latter and in the order named were Dogmata Supreme Sweet and Wild Turkey TurkeyAfter After a slight delay they were off in good alignment with Gaillardia showing the way but Supreme Sweet the speedy Superior Stable mare was right with him and they raced in close formation as they negotiated the opening quarter in 23 and the half mile in 48 flat They raced like a team to midway of the stretch and then Gaillardia shook her off and as Supreme Sweet dropped back Loggia was sent up with a rush She indulged the leader in a brisk duel and he showed signs of weakening as they came inside the final eighth For a moment it appeared as if the Cattarinich filly was going to win easily but Altmark which had been making up ground with rapid strides continued his gallant march under strong pressure and overhauled Log ¬ gia in the final strides to gain the verdict by the shortest of margins marginsTRACK TRACK DRIES OUT OUTThe The track good for race time was heavy during the morning hours but dried con ¬ siderably under the strong winds which pre ¬ vailed throughout the day and which blew with such force that it was almost impossi ¬ ble to see the upper turn when the horses paraded for the sixth race The threat of rain served to hold the attendance down to the smallest of the meeting meetingOaten Oaten which races for Shipp and McMas ter made a show of his opponents in the fourth race when he galloped over the one mile and seventy yards course to an easy victory winning by the decisive margin of five lengths with apprentice Hank Manifold looking back as they crossed the line of fin ¬ ish Balthasar was closest to the victor when they closed the engagement finishing second four lengths in advance of the highly regarded Northern Sir which finished third nosing out Wild Transit which came from last place to take the minor award The performance of Backward Never left his admirers in a quandary when he turned in another dismal performance finishing last in the field of seven and far in the wake of the successful ones For the first quar ¬ ter G Arnold had Backward Never right up with the pacemaker and he continued well Continued on twentysixth page ALTMARK BY A NOSE Continued from first page to the turn out of the back stretch where he dropped completely out of it and was outrun thereafter The performance of Northern Sir was almost as shocking when he failed to keep pace paceJim Jim Ormont turned the tables on his con ¬ querors which downed him in their last engagement when he scored in handy fashion in the opening race to finish one length in advance of Flashing Thru while Annan was third with Run On closing in fourth place placeOn On this occasion apprentice C Rollins handled the victor in a more capable man ¬ ner and after beginning in last place it was no task for him to race around his rivals on the turn then continued to over ¬ haul Flashing Thru and drew out in the closing stages Why Not which won in such convincing fashion last out was outrun from the start and finished fifth fifthMaidens Maidens three and older contested the threequarters second race This resulted in a mild surprise when Radiation proved an easy winner leading home Curb Bit My Aga and nine others othersCatch Catch On was a strong favorite to win but after racing prominently for half the distance tired badly when urged The win ¬ ner showing an improved performance un ¬ der the capable handling of apprentice Paul Keester moved up fast after the first quar ¬ ter and won going away awayFrank Frank Wright saddled another winner when he sent Aurica postward in the third race and the daughter of Bunting never gave her backers much concern after turn ¬ ing for home moving up to Gallopette with a rush and after disposing of her drew away to win under mild urging Irfaneh which had been outrun for threeeighths moved up with good determination and while she finished with her usual belated rush she was no match for the winner Gal ¬ lopette displayed good speed setting the early pace but tired badly in the final stages and gave way to her successful rivals Foun ¬ tain might have been a stronger factor in this but for being almost thrown turning out of the back stretch He failed to be a contender after the incident
