IsabelDodge Dodge Sloane continued her remarkable racing successes at the opening of Belmont Park when Bob Smith sent out Okapi to win the famous old Toboggan Handicap The Thecolt colt was repeating for he was winner pf the 1r TT 8JJ VT + V veteran Mack Garner who piloted Cavalcade to his victory in the Kentucky Derby for Mrs Sloane SloaneLapped Lapped on Okapi at the finish came George D Wideners Kawagoe and right at his heels was C V Whitneys High Glee so that threeyearolds were second and third and it was the first outing for the Whitney miss The racing was welcomed to the course of the Westch ester Association by an im ¬ mense and representative crowd that was estimated at 30000 The track was at its best though there was a winter chill in the air airFifteen Fifteen paraded to the post for the To ¬ boggan which carried a net value of 3250 to the winner and at post time Kawagoe was a slight favorite over the others He had drawn the outside post position which was a bit of a handicap and his race was an excellent one when he was only beaten half a length by the fouryearold fouryearoldCROWDING CROWDING AT START STARTThere There was some delay at the start and while it was a good one there was some crowding right after they left the stalls and Slapdash was the chief sufferer when she was crowded completely out of the running Ladysman was likewise unlucky and Good Advice met with some interference Sgt Byrne High Glee Kawagoe and Okapi all escaped this early interference and they were soon racing along in the van with Kawagoe in the outside position positionSgt Sgt Byrne was first to tire and then for an instant High Glee threatened to come through on the inside but she hung and Garner rushing Okapi when inside the final furlong sent him through an opening be ¬ tween the Whitney filly and Kawagoe to take command commandRight Right to the end Kawagoe fought along gamely to be beaten only half a length and High Glee was right on the heels of the Widener colt and for a first out it was a smastiing race Sgt Byrne was fourth and he had only beaten E R Bradleys Tick On a scant neck Incidentally Tick On had a rough trip and had to close a big gap to finish as close as he did didRigan Rigan McKinney the accomplished ama ¬ teur jockey in an excellent exhibition rode his Amagansett to victory in the short course of the International Steeplechase Handicap It carried a net value of 1850 to the winner Mrs John Hay Whitneys Rocky Run took second place and in a stir ¬ ring battle Benedictine from the Sanford Stud Farm Stable just beat J E Wideners Arc Light for third Two casualities oc ¬ curred in the running when Aries went down three fences from the finish and Bushranger a stablemate to Arc Light fell two jumps from the finish The riders J Mergler anc F Slate both escaped injury injuryc c DROP IN TEMPERATURE An unseasonal drop in the temperature occurred for the opening of the big meeting but the crowd began arriving early and from the first train which pulled out of the Penn ¬ sylvania station at 1220 each special car carried standing loads while additional coaches were added to some of them to take care of the crowds Others who had mo ¬ tored to the course came in such numbers that before 130 some of the many ap ¬ proaches congestedIt were uncomfortably congested It was a day for heavy topcoats and furs but there were a few hardy individuals on hand with white shoes and straw hats but they were reading the calendar and not the thermometer Various clubhouse luncheons enlivened that enclosure while members of Continued on
