DASHER WINS OLD FIXTURE Epinard Colt Joins Winners of Great American Stakes Second Consecutive Victory in Race for forWheatley Wheatley Stable Halcyon in a aRunning Running Mood NEW YORK N Y June SO Dasher the juvenile son of Epinard and Rothermel in ¬ scribed his name on a notable roster when he was winner of the Great American Stakes at Aqueduct today but it is a race that has gone back from its vorth when it was es ¬ tablished in 1889 It was probably the worst field that ever raced for the prize when the son of Epinard was only opposed by Mrs C Oliver Isclins Evangelist which raced sec ¬ ond J6hn C Clarks Vera Cruz which fin ¬ ished third and the Brandon Stables Tutti curio the only other starter The race car ¬ ried a net value of 2610 against a net of 18675 when its top value was reached dur ¬ ing the days of its importance importanceThe The score of Dasher gave the Wheatley Stable two successive victories for last year the same prize went to the good filly Slap ¬ dash from the Wheatley Ctable She like Dasher does not properly belong among the champions of long ago in this old fixture but there is small chance for its coming back to its former glory This year most of the candidates of quality are on the ailing list and accordingly the field was both small and unworthy unworthyFor For the entertainment of the weekend crowd the program was not an attractive one with three of the races substitutes but some good racing resulted The crowd was not up to that of other holidays but it was surprisingly large considering the program programThere There was little delay at the post in the Great American Stakes and the start was a poor one when both Dasher and Vera Cruz left their stalls slowly Evangelist and Tutticurio were both away fast and they were the ones to dominate until well inside the turn of the course Dasher in the meantime was making up ground from his slow beginning and Kurtsinger was riding with supreme confidence He caught Mrs Iselins colt with little trouble to come on and be winner by six lengths Evangelist had beaten Vera Cruz by a length and a half and Tutticurio quit so badly he was beaten off offThe The Aqueduct Claiming Handicap was the real feature in a racing way It was a seven furlongs dash and C V Whitneys Halcyon by a sensational stretch rush was winner over Edward R Bradleys Brother Joe with George H Bostwicks Pompeius taking third from Old Master A furlong from the finish there did not seem a remote chance for Halcyon to win he was so far back in the field but racing under a furious drive he moved up fast to win by a neck going away awayAs As he has done so often before Halcyon was away from the stalls so slowly he was a bad last and the fact that he had the outside stall at the seven furlongs mark added to the handicap handicapMoisson Moisson from the Greentree Stable in a remarkably close finish in the opening five furlong dash just lasted to earn the decision by inches over J H Louchheims Morpluck Well back of the first two there was another close battle for third with Mrs S B Ma ¬ sons Nubs just beating Ever True for that part of the purse purseThe The short course steeplechase one of three substitute races on the card only saw three of the five that started complete the course Rigan McKinneys Escapade the favorite while showing the way went down with Scott at the sixth jump while Miguel A Suarez was so badly lamed before he had completed a turn of the field that he was pulled up by Newton With these elimin ated Mrs Gwladys Whitneys Rideaway proved the winner over Mrs T W Durants St Francis which beat M B Metcalf Jrs The Graf GrafAfter After Escapade had come to grief he con ¬ tinued in the running riderless and he was a decided menace to the other three horses that raced He went out after The Graf which fell heir to the lead and Little was unable to keep clear of him himMaking Making a good turn in the run for home McGinnis readily went to The Graf with Rideaway but the loose Escapade was gal ¬ loping along before him and coming to the last fence McGinnis swerved his mount sharply to the inside to avoid interference Over the fence he rapped Escapade sharply with his whip to drive him from the course and when that was accomplished Mrs Whit ¬ neys gelding was home the winner by six lengths
