Here and There on the Turf TurfLadysman Ladysman Tops Holiday Field Advising Anna Is Feared Dark Secret Brooklyn Choice Proper Leniency Is Shown With Equipoise taking things easy for the past couple of weeks and Dark Secret re ¬ maining at Aqueduct for the Brooklyn Han ¬ dicap William R Coes Ladysman will be the starting top weight in the Stars and Stripes Handicap 10000 added special fea ¬ ture on Arlington Parks Fourth of July program The juvenile champion of 1932 has been assigned 120 pounds by hantli capper Jack Campbell for the mile and a furlong test this being a jump of six pounds over what he carried in the Suburban Han ¬ dicap when he defeated Equipoise by inches This increase appears a trifle steep but the Arlington handicapper evidently has wholesome respect for the prowess of the Pompey Lady Belle fouryearold fouryearoldEven Even being at the top of the imposts Ladysman will not have to give so much weight to many of his opponents including Indian Runner and Plucky Play which have been assigned 118 pounds each Ladysman and Indian Runner appear to hold the class of the Stars and Stripes field but if they prevail they may not do so before having a reckoning with Mrs Jack Howards Ad ¬ vising Anna which gets into the race with Continued on thirtieth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF TURFContinued Continued from second page the feathery impost of 100 pounds The fouryearold daughter of Blondin is in ex ¬ cellent condition at present judging from her workout over the distance in 152 Satur ¬ day and she has the speed to be away and out of trouble Both Ladysman and Indian Runner do their best racing from behind behindA A good part of the Stars and Stripes field will be composed of horses which have been competing in handicap circles throughout the season in this sector They include Clarify Sazerac Navanod and Frank Or mont as well as the Howard filly Clarify is considered the best of these by Campbell with a rating of 110 pounds and Frajik Or mont is the least regarded with 100 pounds Others looming as1 candidates include Barn Swallow fast track only Inlander mud only Big Beau Good Goods and Thomas ville The latter two are threeyearolds which displayed winning form in their races last week Even though Dark Secret is remaining in the East for the Brooklyn he is not doing so because of an easier spot but rather be ¬ cause his connections would like to see him become the first horse in the history of the time honored event to win it twice He also has the Empire City Handicap at Yonkers in view on Saturday a race he also won last year and victories in the two races will be worth just about as much as he could pick up in the Stars and Stripes However he will go put to Chicago for the Arlington Handicap set for renewal on July 21 21In In the Brooklyn Dark Secret must take up 126 pounds having incurred a penalty for winning the other day Despite the ar ¬ rangement in weights the Wheatley Stable star appears to hold the other probable starters safe Tick On weighted at 120 pounds is rated best of the other older horses The other starters of which there will be but a very few unfortunately will come from the lightweights and perhaps in ¬ clude a couple of threeyearolds Selection of Frank J Bryan by the New York Racing Commission to be its steward at the Syracuse meeting to open Wednes ¬ day is a happy one With The Jockey Club naming E C Smith and the association Thomas C Bradley racing fans to be served by that session can rest assured that the sport will be in the hands of one of the most capable board of stewards ever assembled Each of the three has been with racing in an official capacity for many years and they know their stuff The Onondaga Jockey Club is to be congratulated for having such men in charge of its racing I With the practice of stimulating horses effectively halted and with a good promise of remaining that way racing officials are showing leniency toward those who came under the ban when the fight was at its peak This is as it should be The persons found guilty have been sufficiently pun ¬ ished and they certainly have had scare enough to keep them from temptation again However the leniency shown in New York and at Detroit during the past few days does not give any one permission to take liber ¬ ties with the rules governing stimulation of horses Anyone found guilty in the future should be punished to the fullest extent And they probably will be Friends of the sport may rest assured however that the stimulation of horses is a lost art artEquipoises Equipoises name has not been on the work tab for some time but his does not mean that the champion is far away from a race He probably could not be made ready for a stiff effort Wednesday but Thomas J Healey likely would not experience much difficulty in tuning up the veteran for a mile and a quarter race in a few weeks Equi ¬ poises last effort was in the Suburban Han ¬ dicap at a mile and a quarter on May 30 He has done considerable breezing since then but not lately although as far as the public knows he has been galloping and walking since then It has been explained that the new hoof grown by the champion during last winter has reached a period which will not permit any chances to be taken Just how much time is required is not known but nevertheless he is expected to take part in the Arlington Handicap on July 21
