June 12 Vanderbilt luck at Rockingham Park continues to run high The young proprietor of Sagamore Farm accounted for another stake over the local track this afternoon when the Maryland bred Dreel drove to a neck victory in the Salem Handicap feature of the midweek program Admirably ridden by Skinny Fallon the gelded son of Trojan and Blaz ¬ ing Ember sped past the winning post a neck in advance of the public choice Gentle Knight with the pacemaking Spixi just a nose behind the runnerup Though only five started the race was bitterly contested from flag fall to finish How closely the three leading contenders were rated by the crowd may be judged from the fact that when the Vanderbilt entry of Dreel and Bachelor Dinner paid 225 to 1 it was third choice in the tote wagering Gen ¬ tle Knight was a 2 to 1 favorite with the soregoing Star Porter next in demand at 210 to 1 The victory was the second straight at this park for the Trojan four yearold netting his owner 1910 His final time of 112 marked a sharp race over a track which was a trifle dead deadDreel Dreel broke alertly but Fallon quickly took him back off the pace permitting his stablemate Bachelor Dinner to go out and battle with the leaders His charge gal ¬ loped along in last place far off the front running Spixi until making the turn Then he brought Dreel through swiftly on the inside coming around the leader at the top of the stretch and continuing courageously under extreme pressure to make the ac ¬ counting countingGentle Gentle Knight favored by a feather of ninetyeight and receiving seventeen from the winner probably was best The son of Sir Gallahad III was bumped repeatedly as Hanford attempted to drive him through inside Star Porter and Bachelor Dinner Not until the head of the stretch was reached did the fouryearold manage to come clear and then he finished gamely under hard urging urgingSpixi Spixi another light weight stole through on the inside racing along the back stretch to make the pace until well in the home lane Not until a sixteenth from the finish did he start to weaken and fifty yards out Dreel had him whipped while he gave way to Gentle Knight in the closing strides those that have not won since the opening of the meeting Morden an out ¬ sider in the field raced to the place with Winged Flight coming from the rear of the pace to earn third Mixed Party had the speed to take command at once She was soon joined by Chimney Top and the pair fought it out until there remained only five sixteenths of a mile left to be covered Chimney Top tired and Mixed Party drew out into a good lead leadThere There came a general closing up in the last furlong but Mixed Party was safely home in first place by a length Morden held on gamely in the drive and had his head in front of Winged Flight A similar distance away Chimney Top was fourth fourthAnother Another J Widener castoff accounted for the second best race of the afternoon through the triumph of Bill Weants Fair Sickle in the mile and a sixteenth race which followed the featured attraction The daughter of Sickle and Be Fair was hustled off into a commanding lead on the back stretch after shaking off
