EDDIE J THE VICTOR Prevails In University of Michigan MichiganHandicap Handicap Feature at Detroit Derby Eligibles St Moritz and Dou ¬ ble B Fail Badly Regardless Wins Maryland Purse DETROIT Mich June 12 Detroit Derby eligibles failed dismally in the running of the University of Michigan Handicap that featured the Detroit program here this aft ¬ ernoon At tho end of the mile the Odessa Farms Eddie J was the winner with the Elmtree Stables Fast Stride second and Mrs A J Abels St Moritz third Double B the hope of Jay Weil and with St Moritz the only eligibles to accept sulked after bearing out badly at the first turn pulled up upSeven Seven of Derby age competed with Sun Lightship racing into a clear lead during the run to the back stretch Plucky Baby was in closest pursuit when the field com ¬ pleted the quarter but Alf Abel had St Moritz in the lead soon afterwards How ¬ ever the son of St James was unable to draw clear of his field and nearing the final threeeighths R Montgomery had the winner in the lead Drawing away rapidly Eddie J was clear of the pace at the stretch turn but Fast Stride moved up rapidly and he was only a head back of the winner when they reached the final furlong In the run to the wire Eddie J held on in fine style while Fast Stride which had worked his way forward at a loss of ground weakened weakenedIDEAL IDEAL RACING CONDITIONS CONDITIONSAlthough Although he was forced to lose ground with St Moritz in reaching the lead Abel drove the son of St James through on the inside for the drive but he too faltered in the last stages stagesIdeal Ideal weather and track conditions again prevailed for the sport With several Derby eligibles under colors for the feature event another large crowd was present for the sport which with few exceptions was very formful formfulSupporting Supporting the feature was the Midland Purse for Grade C performers and it re ¬ sulted in a popular victory when the Saddle Spur Stables Regardless was returned a handy winner He reached the end of the six furlongs slightly more than a length be ¬ fore F H Carpenters Capitalist which led WillTs Sharpe Kilmers Sun Apollo by half a length for second Miss Careful the second choice was fourth with Metaurus and Sil verette completing the task in the named order orderWell Well ridden by Eddie Legere and saved while following in closest pursuit of the pacemaking Capitalist and Metaurus the winner reached the lead in the final furlong to have something left when the finish was reached Never far back of the leaders dur ¬ ing the run down the back stretch Miss Careful was shuffled back at the far turn but after finding clear sailing she tired in the late stages stagesWEDGE WEDGE LAD SURPRISE SURPRISETen Ten maiden twoyearold colts and geld ¬ ings furnished the sport in the opening dash and it resulted in a surprise when C F Hockleys Wedge Lad was a driving winner Hennessey was second a length back of the Victorious son of Cloudland and two lengths before Hasty Day which lasted to beat the tiring Sun Asia for minor honors honorsWorking Working his way forward steadily and forced to come around the leaders in the stretch Wedge Lad subdued Hennessey in the final furlong to be drawing away rap ¬ idly when the finish was reached During the opening halfmile Sun Asia Hennessey and Hasty Day raced in close order Sun X a 19 to 10 choice was never a factor factorHilise Hilise rewarded her many supporters who installed her a 9 to 10 choice for the Ludington Purse second event when she was an easy winner over Chinese Indian Geneva Cross and six other threeyearolds from the Grade D class Ridden by A Craig and under good urging while disposing of Geneva Cross the winner drew away after reaching the stretch to be two lengths be ¬ fore Chinese Indian at the end The latter but for being in close quarters during the opening fivesixteenths probably would have been closer up at the end endThe The combination of C J Bild and jockey A Craig completed a double when Jesting was an easy winner of the third race also at six furlongs Second went to the heavily supported Crackle which finished two lengths in the wake of the winner and a head before Spartan Lady LadyBeginning Beginning fast but unable to keep up with the speedy Crackle and Merry Caroline during the opening threeeighths Jesting came to the outside for the final drive and in reaching the lead bore over on the tiring Crackle CrackleMrs Mrs L H Nimkoffs Stall Man provided the third popular victory of the afternoon by leading I Pass Pish Tush and seven others to the finish of the fifth race Ridden by A Craig who was completing a triple Stall Man took command soon after the start and forced to withstand a hard drive during the final threequarters reached the finish a neck before I Pass which beat Pish Tush by a nose for second
