FRIEND CHARLEY IN FRONT FRONTBumps Bumps Way to Victory Over Pro jectile and Uppermost at Long Branch New Record TORONTO Ont June 12 In a roughly run race Friend Charley bearing the silks of the Jewell Bros was winner of the Goodyear Tire Handicap a gallop of one mile and seventy yards that featured the final program of the spring racing at the Long Branch Jockey Club here today and clipped threefifths of a second from the twodayold record when he ran the distance in 141 to triumph at the direct expense of Projectile and Uppermost two standard bearers of the H C Hatch barn barnLanding Landing in fourth position to finish lapped on the Hatch pair who were separated by a nose as they finished a length back of the Jewell Bros colt came Miss Monoa in the silks of D R Stuart while in the wake of the latter came Trey Finalist and Direct Hit to complete the field fieldFriend Friend Charley was in a running mood and established a new record for the dis ¬ tance but there were many anxious mo ¬ ments for supporters of the colt after he caused some interference to Uppermost when taking command midway in the home stretch and after he was across the line win ¬ ner by a length Jockey S Young who rodo Uppermost lodged a claim of foul against the winner following the running but his claim was dismissed by the stewards after deliberation and the result was not dis ¬ turbed turbedIn In the funning Uppermost dashed out to show the way while Friend Charley went along in pursuit and close to the fleet Hatch miss with Miss Monoa holding third posi ¬ tion For the major part of the journey this order was maintained although Friend Charley was gaining on the filly In the stretch both of the leaders were abreast and fighting desperately with Uppermost on the inside insideFriend Friend Charley was racing strongly and succeeded in gaining command but his mar ¬ gin was EO small that he caused some inter ¬ ference Drawing clear immediately after the mishap Friend Charley appeared to have the contest at his mercy but Projectile came through on the inside and was crowding the winner as he took second in the final strides from his stablemate
