the eightrace card at Latonia Black Miss which was stepping up a peg in class closed in second place showing a good perform ¬ ance to down Marynell a three time winner at the meeting for the place award My Blaze Lillian Uhl and Grand Rock com ¬ pleted the field of six and closed in the order named namedSprinters Sprinters dominated in the majority of events no less than six of the eight con ¬ tests were given over to those partial to the shorter distances distancesIn In the feature the winner led most of the way from the start Breaking head and head with Lillian Uhl he soon had a com ¬ manding lead and from then on romped along in front with a smooth stride He was never seriously threatened until the final stages where Black Miss staged a rush which brought her to within a length and onehalf of the winner It was by that mar ¬ gin that Manners Man led Black Miss over the line of finish Marynell was another length back backIt It is apparent that the Fernandez brothers are the only riders that can get the required result with Marynell for when a rider change is made she goes down to defeat Mack Garners ride on the mare was not up to his usual exhibition and his lack of energy in the closing strides might have beaten his mount for her part of the purse if the race had been at a longer distance Lillian Uhl and Grand Rock which raced among the leaders for three furlongs gave way so badly that they were elimi ¬ nated long before the finish was reached reachedThere There was a threat of rain prior to the opening of the days proceedings and few light sprinkles did fall but not enough to affect the track After the fourth race the sun came out brightly Continued on fourteenth page MANNERS MAN SCORES SCORESContinued Continued from first page Eddy Lee sterling performer from the sta ¬ ble of S J Sharp again made his presence felt when he became a double winner at the meeting In third place from the start the victor had an exacting task wearing down Jaz Age and Clovis which were staging a stubborn battle for honors He overhauled them inside the final sixteenth and won in the closing strides A head farther back came Clovis which held on gamely to gain his award while Princess A O was up to obtain her part of the purse by half a length lengthThe The second race engaging maiden three yearolds and over went to E R Bradleys Browneyed Pat daughter of Haste and Blackeyed Kathleen which led almost from the start to gain her conquest by one length over Buddie Treacy an outsider in the bet ¬ ting while third went to Double R The win ¬ ner highly regarded was heavily backed and while she was in no immediate danger of defeat her admirers were rather con ¬ cerned when Buddie Treacy charged down the stretch to give her the strongest of oppo ¬ sition John Marcum which bled in a re ¬ cent work was stricken in this with a hemorrhage while racing among the leaders leadersThe The form players got a severe jolt in the third race when Semester under a weird ride by jockey J Long failed to share in the purse The winner was Rolanda which fin ¬ ished the threequarters in 113 The victor led the lightly regarded Lynvete to the wire by a length while a nose separated her from Doubleton which gave a vastly improved performance over his last race The latter also had a difficult task to ward off defeat for third when he was but a head in front of Glamorous at the end endAnother Another band of maidens met in the fourth thex Sycamore Claiming Purse It re ¬ sulted in an upset when Aria a member of the mutuel field made good The winner was grouped with Vellas Choice which fin ¬ ished third and Wazayata That they were not entirely overlooked is best told in the return which was 2320 for each 2 ticket Lady Hazel second choice to Footlights closed in second place a nose behind the winner and three lengths in front of Vellas Choice After setting the early pace Foot ¬ lights tired badly and was well beaten Belle Bume ruined her chances by a tardy be ¬ ginning ginningMrs Mrs W Crump ran a good thing in the fifth race but like all other highlytouted horses of the day she finished at the eighth post after racing well for three of the five furlongs furlongsGray Gray Jack under the colors of G S Morris scored a rather lucky victory when he dashed through on the rail and was up to beat Maintenance by a neck which had wrested the lead from Capt Nadi a mo ¬ ment before It was a thrilling finish in which the successful trio came to the end almost on even terms termsIt It was the second straight success for the victor and the son of Jock might prove a useful performer if his subsequent races measure to his effort today
