BALTIMORE Md May 14 Seven threeyearolds including one filly will oppose War Admiral in the fortyseventh renewal of the historic Preakness Stakes at Pimlico tomorrow afternoon and with the track certain to be favorable to mud performers the hopes of those anxious to see the defeat of the Kentucky Derby winner have increased Showers which began falling during yesterdays program and continued last night and this morning have put the track in a sloppy condition from which it is expected to dry out somewhat although a further downpour is likely during the night The forecast for tomorrow is for clearing skies and the management qf the Maryland Jockey Club has gone forward with its plans to handle a capacity crowd indicated by an unprecedented demand for boxes and reserved seats Expected stronger support given Jerome H Louchheims Pompoon Miss Eunice G Rands Merry Maker and the others possess ¬ ing promise in the going goingWith With a field of eight all regarded as certain starters in the Santa Anita Handicap and San Antonio Stakes has 97525 to his credit creditWar War Admirals many supporters regard as a good omen the fact that he drew number one position the same as he had at Churchill Downs last Saturday Like the Derby dis ¬ tance of a mile and onequarter the Preak ¬ ness route of a mile and threesixteenths be ¬ gins on the turn heading into the stretch but with the mediumsized field starter James Milton will be able to line up the horses in the Bahr starting gate in such a manner that all will have a direct run into the straightaway Alongside War Admiral will be Jewell Dor sett the lone filly and the daughter of Cohort and Michigan Girl from the stable of Joe W Brown is conceded some sort of a chance of stepping to the front in the early stages but it is generally expected that Wayne Wright Pompoons new rider will have instructions from trainer Cyrus Field Clarke to send him to the front especially if War Admiral again goes after the pace making job Pompoon drew the number seven position flanked on the outside by Julia M Lofts Mosawtre and on the Inside by Merry Maker MakerMATEY MATEY SURE STARTER STARTERAll All doubt that the original field would stand was eliminated this morning when Preston M Burch trainer of Matey stated that the Walter M Jeffords colt would go to the post regardless of the track condition His mind was made up this morning after the son of Man o War and Tavy had han ¬ dled himself smartly in the sloppy going in his sharpening test in which he breezed five furlongs in 104 the half mile in 50 50It It is Burchs belief that a muddy or drying out track will lessen the chances of a front runner like War Admiral but that slop would be greatly to his advantage advantageThat That the sloppy track made no difference to Pompoon was amply demonstrated in his blowout in which he sped three furlongs in 34 in handy fashion and was easing the half mile in 47 Displaying a marked willingness to run the son of Pompey and Oonagh went the opening furlong in 11 and the quarter in 23 23George George Conway who has continued to look after Over the Top since Glen Riddle sold him to Mrs W H Furst earlier in the week brought that son of Man o War and Cresta out in company with War Admiral and they breezed four furlongs in 49 the quarter in 23 and the threeeighths in 36 View ¬ ing the trial were Furst and trainer B B Williams who will saddle the colt tomorrow and Over the Top was guided by Jack West rope who will be his Preakness pilot Over the Top had no difficulty in keeping pace with War Admiral and his new connections were highly pleased with the effort effortMOSAWTRES MOSAWTRES EASY TRIAL TRIALMosawtres Mosawtres easy three furlongs trial in 39 completed the speed tests of the Preak ¬ ness starters as nothing was done with Jewell Dorsett and Flying Scot The filly reached here yesterday afternoon from Aque ¬ duct where she went a mile and one furlong in 158 Tuesday while the John Hay Whit ¬ ney colt worked a mile in 145 145For For their final important workouts Over the Top on Tuesday went a mile and one quarter in 212 and on the following day Matey and Merry Maker went the same dis ¬ tance respectively in 210 and 209 while over the mile and one furlong route War Ad ¬ miral went in 156 Pompoon in 157 and Mosawtre in 155 155Only Only three of the Preakness candidates were Derby starters Pompoon having fin ¬ ished second while Merry Maker was back in the pack after being one of the last to leave the post Pompoon is the only other horse to have won a stake this season last years twoyearold champion having cap ¬ tured the Paumonok Handicap at Jamaica in impressive fashion in his first start startHis His 1936 record shows victories in the Bel mont Futurity Junior Champion and Na ¬ tional Stallion Stakes War Admiral which was third in the latter event scored his most impressive triumph as a youngster in the Eastern Shore Handicap HandicapNO NO BRACKETS THIS SEASON SEASONJewell Jewell Dorsett is the lone Preakness hope which has not earned brackets this season her last engagement having been in the Wood Memorial in which she finished third back of Melodist and Sir Damion She was second to Drawbridge in a filly dash at Jamaica and went unplaced in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds GroundsFlying Flying Scot which ran second to Pom ¬ poon in the Junior Champion last fall goes into the Preakness with a fine performance at Jamaica to his credit In defeating a group of secondary threeyearolds in hol ¬ low fashion the son of The Porter and Caledonia ran the mile and seventy yards in 143 just a second and fourfifths off the track record recordMosawtre Mosawtre an improving son of On Watch and Kippy proved victorious in his final two starts at the Long Island course but the company was far from the class he will be meeting tomorrow However trainer Max Hirsch believes the son of Sortie deserves the chance of going after the rich and his ¬ torical event DECODED IMPROVEMENT After two disappointing efforts one at Havre de Grace and the other here Matey broke into the winners circle last Friday when he defeated a field of fair older horses coming from well back in the stretch with a very impressive bid even though he did not feel the sting of the whip The Jeffords colt has collected quite a following in this section eitherthird and consequently he may be either third or fourth choice in the Preakness wagering wageringThe The only last minute change in the plans of the eight candidates was the selection of j Johnny Gilbert to ride Flying Scot instead of Eddie Arcaro as was originally scheduled Gilbert is under contract to John Hay Whitney owner of the colt whereas Arcaro is employed by the Greentree Stable Earlier in the week the two owners made a trade whereby Gilbert was to ride Memory Book Bookfor for Greentree in the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park tomorrow but advices from New York late today were to the effect that this agreement had been cancelled cancelledThe The Preakness is sixth on the eightrace program and general manager Matt L Daiger stated today that the field probably would reach the post at about 530 oclock Eastern Standard Time A steeplechase will open the program at 2 oclock after which the infield will be thrown open to the pub ¬ lic Wagering facilities and refreshment counters have been installed for the benefit of persons who desire to view the races from the infield
