DAWN PLAY WINS ACORN Earns 10100 Through Victory in Stake at Belmont King Ranch Filly in Close Finish With Royal Raiment and Draw ¬ bridge Post Delay NEW YORK N Y May 26 In a stirring finish that required a photograph for a de ¬ cision Dawn Play carried the silks of R J Kleebergs King Ranch to victory in the Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park today She defeated John Hay Whitneys Royal Rai ¬ ment while Drawbridge from the Wheat ley Stable was an exceedingly close third before Manatella which carried the silks of William DuPont Jrs Foxcatcher Farm sta ¬ ble This stake carried a net value of 10100 to the winner and it is an important step ¬ ping stone to the Coaching Club American Oaks for which each of the fillies that ran is eligibleThis eligible This was the third start of the season for Dawn Play and her first victory she having been beaten easily by Royal Raiment in a six furlongs dash at Jamaica The running conclusively demonstrated that Royal Rai ¬ ment is unable to carry her speed for the full mile and it makes Dawn Play appear a better prospect than ever before for the Oaks OaksSWEET SWEET DESIRE FRACTIOUS FRACTIOUSThere There was a considerable delay at the post for which Sweet Desire was chiefly to blame and the start was not exactly a good one oneAs As the stretch was reached Royal Raiment was still in front but Dawn Play soon moved into second place and Balaski had a slight hold on her It was inside the final furlong that Royal Raiment began to shorten stride and Dawn Play drew alongside The daugh ¬ ter of Clock Tower once in command held her advantage to race past the line winner by a neck neckThe The early fractions of the race were fast when Royal Raiment galloped the opening quarter in 23 and went to the half in 46 and the six furlongs in 112 but that pace died away badly when it took 26 to run the last quarter and make the final time 138 138Cycle Cycle from the Howe Stable showed great improvement in the Voter Handicap and racing in his best form scored over Mrs E Graham Lewis Little Miracle with Al ¬ fred Gwynne Vanderbilts Savage beating Jean Bart for third The only other starter was Wise Prince and he was another disap ¬ pointing favorite favoriteARCARO ARCARO TAKES LEAD LEADArcaro Arcaro rode a smart race on the son of Sickle when he stole away with him in the early stages and opened up a lead that the others could not overcome overcomeWilliam William F Hitts Suntime was winner of the opening five furlongs dash for plater juveniles of the better quality Charles S I Bromleys Our Ketcham raced to the place with the Natoma Stables Coal King beating Jack Be Nimble for third Continued on twentysixth page DAWN PLAY WINS ACORN Continued from first page There was a long delay at the post for which Suntime and Coal King were respon ¬ sible and before Cassidy could have an alignment to his liking Coal King was taken to a position outside the stalls The start was a bad one with Our Ketcham away last of the small field while Suntime was away well as was Coal King KingThere There was a surprise result in the steeple ¬ chase which was fashioned for those of Class B when H E Talbot Jrs Ship Execu ¬ tive by a belated rush was up to score over Mrs M MacNeilles St Francis and Thomas Hitchcocks El Dorador just saved third from Masked Knight There were two casualties in the running when Black Grouse unseated Pikor at the last fence and the saddle slipped on Prattler Prattler completed the course despite the slipping of his saddle but it ruined any chance he may have had and Pikor was unhurt unhurtRUNNING RUNNING ORDER ORDERSwimalong Swimalong was the one to cut out the pace and El Dorador went along under re ¬ straint back of him with Masked Knight and Black Grouse in close order St Fran ¬ cis was in the middle of the field and Mr White was saving ground with him by rac ¬ ing close o the flags all the way At the lower end of the field this almost resulted in his being put into the hedge hedgeWhen When the back field was reached El Dora dor took the lead from Swimalong and Prattler though racing under a loosened girth and steered to the outside of the course by reason of that mishap was in third place Then St Francis was rushed through on the inside to take the lead from El Dorador and as he went to the lead he was rushed right along by Mr White to swing into the front field two lengths clear But Ship Executive was coming into the running rapidly and after reaching second place at the final fence he outgamed the gray to be winner by half a length lengthCHARING CHARING CROSS BEATEN BEATENThe The big surprise of the day came in the running of the Kensington a gallop of a mile and a sixteenth for the threeyearolds in which Marshall Fields Charing Cross was a prohibitive favoritie He finished last of the four that performed and the purse went to Fred Kahns Little Sleeper in a camera finish with Alvin Untermyers Gurkha and Walter M Jef fords Rouge et Noir was third There was an excuse for Charing Cross when he went so seriously amiss in the running that Stout dismounted and walked back to the scales
