HISTORIC ERA SHOWS SPEED SPEEDRuns Runs Five Furlongs in 59 to Capture Mayflower Stakes Trotter Juvenile Smartly Ridden by Johnny Deering in Suffolk Downs Feature Onrush Surprises SurprisesBOSTON BOSTON Mass May 26 C H Trotters Historic Ere ridden out smartly by Johnny Deering won the 2500 added Mayflower Stakes in which juveniles were tested at five furlongs at Suffolk Downs th after noon The midweek feature drew half a dozen to the post after Araho Lass winner of the Old Colony Stakes at Narragansett 1 was withdrawn by Bobby Curran Stage Beauty a Strolling Player filly purchased from Admiral Gary Grayson by Mrs P A Shaw just a few hours before the contest fan a corking race to finish second beaten a length and a half by the winner The latter coupled in the betting with Cold Breeze is a frontrunner Today she was off in close quarters and Griggs was forced to make much use of her in getting to the top Because of this she was found wanting in the late stages when Historic Era made his winning charge Stage Beauty was just a nose clear of Manhasset Stables Smoke Signal as they flashed by the judges Bold Turk the favorite ran an uninspired race to finish fourth in the small field fieldGRIGGS GRIGGS USES WHIP Historic Era broke in front with Cold Breeze after him in the race The latter took the lead in the first sixteenth while Griggs was weaving his way between horses with Stage Beauty Once the filly got running room she went to the front and widened out around the turn But Historic Era was a hardrunning horse and went after the eader in a determined manner At the eighth he had drawn within a neck of her There Griggs used his whip and the filly went along I with her rival to the sixteenth where her early efforts began to tell and she dropped back inch by inch As she faltered His ¬ toric Era widened out and with Deering right at him all the way home was drawing away at the finish finishThe The tired Stage Beauty had difficulty in staving off the final charge of Smoke Sig ¬ nal but just lasted it out for the place Bold Turk ran an even race in fourth place and was never a serious menace They went the distance in 59 59Todays Todays racing was decided under clear skies and over a fast track with some 10000 fans withnessing the sport sportThe The form players were badly disappointed as All Forlorn strongest choice of the meet ing at 3 to 5 quit badly in the final sixteenth i I and wound up last in a field of six horses j that went threequarters of a mile The I event was won by Paul Codds Onrush who paid 17 He made amends for the defeat of Codds Pageboy in the previous race At the end of the journey Onrush was two I lengths in advance of John J Shugrues Infinata Royal Blunder was the same mar gjn back of the runnerup and Rough Party finished fourth fourthAll All Forlorn went out with Rough Party and the pair battled for the lead until they j wiere approaching the fiveeighths post j where the favorite drew off to the lead I There Onrush began to gain steadily He had headed All Forlorn by the time they reached the eighth post and Infinata went j on by the choice as they approached the I j sixteenth post There All Forlorn quit and the whole field swept past him The race was run in 112 flat flatDanny Danny Sullivans My Blonde under a good ride from Napier drove to victory in the first event of the afternoon at six furlongs The winner went to a slight lead on the far turn and drove on gamely to get the deci ¬ sion by half a length over Miss Mary Whites Merovech It was a very close finish for second position Noahs Pride finishing a nose back of the runnerup Miss Tad was fourth in the field of eleven elevenGAYETTE GAYETTE WINS WINSThe The ponysized Gayette from the stable i of Mrs P A Shaw gained a head decision i over Swivel Neck in a stirring finish in the second race Schieh outrode Cimpanelli in L the stretch Gayette one of the smallest horses in training set most of her own pace to achieve the game victory but was a 1 tired horse as she finished out Three lengths back of the battling leaders H Kanes Cpmeda was third Pampered finished in fourth place placeThe The winner and Harlequinade went out to make the pace and charged down the back stretch head and head well in ad ¬ vance of the others Harlequinade began to go back at the far turn and Swivel Neck raced up to collar Gayette The little filly held on stubbornly however and lasted it put under Schiehs excellent handling It was as pretty a finish as has been wit ¬ nessed here hereWillis Willis Sharpe Kilmers Teddy Patic rid ¬ den by Ken Knott scored an easy victory in the six furlongs race that came third pass ¬ ing the judges some three lengths clear of Natty Boy from the stable of D C Hall and Miss L Warrender Half a length back of the runnerup Paul Codds good thing Pageboy a horse that was well backed was third He showed speed in the final six ¬ teenth but his bid came much too late Upper Berth was fourth Only seven went
