SHREVEPORT TRAINING WORK Louisiana Meeting Bridging the Gap Between Fall and Winter Meets Best Material in History of Track to Be BeAvailable Available for Daily Programs Opens Saturday SHREVEPORT La Oct 18 Training activities are increasing steadily at the State Jockey Club track here as the date of the in ¬ auguration of the twentyfiveday meeting at the State Fair Grounds approaches Al ¬ though all of the horses which were on the track this morning during the training period did not engage in brisk trials more than fifty campaigners indulged in slow gal ¬ i lops as there is very little training necessary to sharpen the racers for the local meeting meetingThe The majority of the thoroughbreds quar ¬ tered here have been campaigning on the Northern tracks during the summer months and the State Jockey Clubs Autumn meeting I bridges the gap that would otherwise occur until the opening of the winter tracks in Louisiana Florida and California CaliforniaJudging Judging from the caliber of horses which have been registered with racing secretary Emmet A Hileman thus far and many more to come in between now and the start of the racing season some of the best material in the history of the sport in this section will be available Word was received by Bud Ray trainer of the pretentious William A Mikel string which is the largest at the Caddo Parrish course that the remainder of the stable will be shipped from Chicago within the next few days and is scheduled to arrive at the Fair Grounds track prior to the inauguration of the season The Mikel string will aggre ¬ gate more than 20 horses when the others arrive and figures to play an important part in the sport sportVETERAN VETERAN GOLD STEP STEPOne One of the most prominent of the Illinois turfmans string is the veteran performer Gold Step which matched strides with some of the countrys best sprinters a few years ago While Gold Step now eleven years old has not been very active this year trainer Ray is confident that the veteran will come in for his share of purses during the season here Continued on thirtyninth page SHREVEPORT TRAINING WORK Continued from first page Others under the supervision of Ray are Chinese Empress Roy D Royal Mabel Bane Mirabane Taddy Bane Benefit Ton ogar New Brighton Rustic Lassie John Bane Bcna Bane Mira Servant Bay Bane Rocky Prince and Terrier TerrierMany Many of the Mikel thoroughbreds are homebreds having been foaled at the spa ¬ cious thoroughbred nursery maintained by that sportsman at Carlock 111 which is one of the largest in that state Jockey Ted King who has been attached to the stable for several years is expected in Shreveport for the start and will do the bulk of the rid ¬ ing for the outfit according to advices re ¬ ceived here hereThe The stable of George B McCamey wealthy Fort Worth sportsman and breeder was aug ¬ mented this morning by the arrival of two twoyearolds and a like number of older horses which have been turned over to Hank Manifold for conditioning
