her first start over a distance of ground and mov ing up in class Orchids Next racing for John E Hughes came from a trailing posi tion in the running of the Bolivar Purse an allowance affair for twoyearold fillies the principal attraction at Laurel today Meet Ing eleven other fillies eight of which are eligible for the 10000 added Selima Stakes to be decided Saturday and which served as a preliminary to the rich juvenile special the daughter of Time Maker made her ac counting that was a sharp surprise at the expense of W F Hitts Sun Girl Wheatley Stables Matterhorn choice of the contest which raced coupled with Wise Lady of the Belair Stud was an exceedingly close third and the latter was fourth before A G Van derbilts Equivalent and the eight others The winner along with Royal Bit Spot News and War Grand were the only starters under colors for the race that are not nom inated for the Selina Stakes The score marked the third victory of the year for Orchids Next and it was by far her most ambitious showing of her career when she led Sun Girl to the finish by one length Matterhorn coming from far back to land third was not disgraced by her performance and of the eligibles for the weekend attrac tion turned in the best performance of any of the others here when he was beaten a nose for the place placePOST POST DELAY In the Bolivar a delay of several minutes kept the lassies in their stalls until the bell rang and it saw Otra quickest in stride to set the early pace The King Ranch filly bad a lot of speed and went down the back stretch showing the way to H P Headleys Airacuda and War Grand which raced abreast of each other Setting a steady pace Otra left the far side of the track in ad cance of her company but at the turn Wise Lady came out of the pack to displace Aira ¬ cuda and for a moment threatened to drive on by along the inside just as Sun Girl and Orchids Next entered into the fight In the last fivesixteenths Sun Girl drove into a short command but Orchids Next had swept up fast and succeeded in running down her opponents to prevail at the close closeThe The afternoon began advantageously for students of form when Mrs A Pelleteris Hermosillo installed a topheavy favorite defeated eleven other mediocre sprinters in the first event at six furlongs The score while popular with the crowd came in a fighting finish and by a nose as the son of Pennant finished the distance in advance of F J Vollmers Happy Nymph an outsider in the large field There were some anxious moments for the supporters of the favorite after the close of the number when the ar ¬ row indicator on the finish board revealed a claim of foul against Hermosillo but this was in error as the claim was made against Happy Nymph who was disqualified after she extended the Pelleteri sprinter to the limit limitDRIVING DRIVING FINISH FINISHIn In a startling improved performance over his three previous starts in jumping events here Persian Prince from the Judy John ¬ son Stable upset calculations when he made the running throughout the abouttwomile journey to register in a drive In his pre ¬ vious starts here the sixyearold Brown Bud gelding revealed little of the ability that he uncovered in this race and with a change in riders from the amateur T T Mott Jr to J Penrod it brought a decided I change in the veteran geldings performance He took the lead immediately after the start t whereas in his last three outings he fell far r back early and fenced poorly After leading for all of the trip Persian Prince reached the finish two lengths in advance of Mont peliers Slievereigh with the heavily sup ¬ ported favorite Promoter another full length away to easily save third thirdLeading Leading from start to finish Ariel Toy from the H W Jackson Stable making his first start of the fall season in Maryland defeated eight other smart juveniles in the decision of the third race fashioned for colts and geldings of that age Ridden by jockey L Hardy and
