CONN DEFEATS BETTINA NEW YORK N Y July 14 Billy Conn Pittsburgh battler hammered out a fifteen round decision over Melio Bettina in Madi ¬ son Square Garden last night and thereby became recognized as the worlds lightheavy ¬ weight champion by the New York State Athletic Commission and the National Box ¬ ing Association The latter association had ordered John Henry Lewis lightheavyweight title vacated because of his defective vision Both judges and Referee Frank Fullam voted in favor of Conn The fight was such a spirited affair that Promoter Mike Jacobs signed up the pair for a return bout in the fall
