KEN McCOMBS Piloted Grand Appeal j a frontrunning score in the juvenile juvenileevent event at Lincoln Fields yesterday GRAND APPEAL NEVER HEADED AT LINCOLN FIELDS BELMONT SPRINT TO TANGLED BY WIDE MARGIN Sears Filly Surprises in Turning Back Say Nomore in Feature Event EventMcCombs McCombs Guides Daughter of Granville to Length and Half Victory in Trails End Purse Melodist Returns to Winning Ways in Second Race on Card CardCRETE CRETE 111 May 28 Howard Hockenbury saddled the winner of the fourth race a fivefurlong dash for twoyearold fillies known as the Trails End Farm Purse when he sent out Grand Appeal to run in the gray and blue silks of Wesley Sears and his wife The Chicagoowned daughter of Granville Appeal was accounting for the second victory of her career in five startsas she drove across the final iharker a length and a half before the favored Say Nomore who races for William P Flanigan Thomas C Piatts Rangle went to the outside to find racing room in the stretch and earned the third part of the purse although never able to menace the first two Grand Appeal received comparatively little support and she paid 1960 after finishing her assignment in 101 over the dusty racing strip The day was an excellent one for racing with a warm warmsun sun shining down and a cool breeze blowing out of the Northwest making conditions quite comfortable A large crowd was in the stand for the midweek program programTAKES TAKES COMMAND IMMEDIATELY IMMEDIATELYGrand Grand Appeal went right to the lead at the gate and never was in real danger al ¬ though Ken McCombs saw fit to go to a drive on her through the stretch as Say Nomore began picking her up through the final furlong Rangle raced along evenly until Littrell took her to the outside in the front lane and called upon her She was never able to get close to the first two but was able to stand oft the bid made by Miss Cedar to lead that Rolls Royce filly a length and a half at the wire wireApprentice Apprentice Dave MacAndrew and the vet ¬ eran Ken McCombs were the riding stars of the program both booting home doubles MacAndrew scored on Mrs Emil Dene marks Melodist and Mrs A B Karles K Dorko while McCombs collected his double on L C and W Sears Grand Appeal and W Ochs Reigh Dear Oddly enough Mac Andrew was scheduled to ride Reigh Dear but a last minute change put McCombs up In upIn accounting for his second victory of the year in the secondary feature of the pro ¬ gram a fivefurlong allowance race known as the Old Hickory Farm K Dorko won in easy fashion as he tripped the distance in 101 Well supported in the wagering K Dorko paid 880 to win winTAKEN TAKEN BACK OFF PACE PACEAlthough Although he was first out of the gate MacAndrew took K Dorko back off the pace and allowed Play Quest and Bolus to show the way before he called upon the Balko colt at the stretch turn Through the front lane K Dorko moved off easily and led Bolus two and onehalf lengths at the final marker J D Weils Gem W who finished third was always within reach of the lead leadContinued Continued on thirtyfirst page GRAND APPEAL NEVER HEADED IN LINCOLN FIELDS FEATURE FEATUREContinued Continued from first page pagebut but was not quite up to the task Play Quest tired to finish fourth fourthThe The first race at seven furlongs and under claiming conditions for 1000 platers went to toC C H Carsons Chosen Time but right with him as he went under the final wire were wereD D Cataldos Kosse Owens Heddes Pan ¬ ther Creek and Mrs J Purpuras High Re ¬ nown The winner turned the distance in 127 and paid 620 to those who backed him down to favoritism as he accounted for his third victory of the year The field re ¬ mained well bunched together most of the way but the early pace was established by Devereux Bros The Anvil At the head of the stretch however that Gee Jay Jay geld ¬ ing dropped out of it rapidly
