REFLECTIONS By CHALIENGER Eight Thirty Missed in Suburban Delaware to Open Annual Meeting Mioland Now Has Splendid Chance Hollywood Gets Away to Fine Start The withdrawal of Eight Thirty from tomorrows Suburban is not only regretted by the Belmont management but by everyone who loves to see a real champion in action Like Equipoise the Widener colorbearer has always been a difficult horse to keep in training but when retired Ekky was one of the most beloved champions of the present century The withdrawal puts an entirely new complexion on the Sub ¬ urban renewal Though ordinarily called lucky Charlie Howard has been anything but that since he came East with Mioland Porters Cap and Chiquita Mia He will get his chance and for that matter so will Mioland in tomorrows 30000 added race On the cold dope the Howard horse should win and this despite the fact that he must give Hash eight pounds and even more to other rivals Should Mioland be returned to the winners circle he will then entrain for the Golden State and the 75000 Holly ¬ wood Gold Cup to say nothing of the 25000 added Sunset Handicap a week later How long Eighty Thirty will be on the shelf is a question so for the next two months the question of supremacy in the handicap division would seem to lie between Mioland and the W L Brann colorbearer Challedon Delaware Iark the homey little track just outside Wilmington will open tomorrow and continue through July 5 for a meeting of thirty days At the moment approximately 1000 horses are on the grounds or stabled nearby During the meeting fourteen stakes will be run Tomorrows opening event will be the 4000 added Dover Stakes for twoyearolds at five furlongs On Satur ¬ day they will stage the 4000 added Wilmington Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses at six furlongs Quite a few improvements will be noticed by those familiar with the Delaware Park of last year Though the grandstand is a small one there is a new dining terrace and roof top promenade now on the paddock end of the structure The dining room is claimed to be one of the finest seen at any race track in this country Steeplechaslng has always been a feature at the Wilmington course and will again be this year with four stake events carded for jumpers A distinct innovation is that on the closing day they will stage the Newcastle Handicap with 10000 added this being a race exclusively for fillies and mares Two other 10000 added events are on the program one being the Kent Handicap for threeyearolds to be run on June 14 and the other the Sussex Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses slated for June 21 Reports from Hollywood Park are high in praise on the new camera now in use there They call it the Film Patrol and this machine is the first ever to take a com ¬ plete running of the race and in color Each of the eight patrol judges takes a separate picture and when all eight sections are put together they give a complete movie from start to finish At first it was planned only to show the complete picture to the judges and stewards on the morning following each days racing Now they plan to show the jockeys the results so that the boys may correct their riding faults if any On the first day a fall occurred on the back stretch and jockey Rodriguez fell heavily Though escaping injury he was unable to tell exactly what happened Patrol judge Zarelli took a complete picture of the mishap and it clearly showed that Rod riquez mount had run into the fence and that no other rider was responsible The Hollywood publicity office informs us that Johnny Maiben and Big Bill Knapp two of the greatest riders of twenty years ago were completely sold on the new device Bill Knapp going so far as to say Its ten times better than seeing the race itself reveal ¬ ing every detail With all the economiums now being heaped upon it this new machine must indeed be a worthwhile addition to track gadgets The Hollywood meeting went off with a bang On Saturday last 778455 passed through the inutuel machines so it is a foregone conclusion that when July rolls around with such events as the Hollywood Derby Hollywood Gold Cup and Sunset Handicap some high and fancy handle figures should be re ¬ ported Until the start of this week Hollywood Park had extended to 133 days its string of uninterrupted weather clear track fast classification by the official chart maker This is a remarkable record if not a worlds record and has been accomplished through four summer seasons under what the Hollywood publicity boys call southern Californias Heavenly Canopy of Sunshine Florida papers please copy The Hollywood publicity boys made us gasp when we read their statement California breeding has quantity if not quality as attested by the Ilaggin Stakes for Californiabreds exclusively Last year so many entries were received the track was forced to split the stakes into two divisions The same thing happened this year after thirtytwo horses were named in the entry box As a matter of fact California breeding is improving year after year and the day will come when the quality will be on a par with the quantity Trotting races came back to Long Island and nightly the harness horses will be in action at the Roosevelt raceway track in Westbury The meeting will extend over a fortynight period and therefore will conflict with the trotting season which is to open at the new Saratoga raceway on June 26 and extend for twentyseven nights through July 26 Reports from the upstate Spa state that the new harness track is in an advanced stage of construction and when completed will embody every feature of the modern harness plant Extending over eightyseven acres there is ample room for the track and the grandstand which has been designed with parimutuel betting booths the feature Eight races will be carded nightly with the exception of Sundays As was demonstrated on Long Island last season trotters are becoming more popular and it would not be surprising if the Roosevelt and Saratoga courses had a success ¬ ful season The Saratoga meeting will end just before the flat racing is transferred from Empire City to the upstate Spa There has been no announcement as to whether a fall trotting meet will be staged at Saratoga Springs after the flat races have returned to the Metropolitan circuit
