fair Association Will Erect Memorial at Entrance of Home Towns Fair Grounds GroundsCRETE CRETE 111 June 2 The late Earl Dew came out of Sac City Iowa to win fame and renown as the leadinjg rider of 1940 after a thrilling duel for that honor right down to the last day of the year with Walter Lee Taylor but in a short time his name may be forgotten except by those who are moved in commenting on the ability of various ridr ers to mention the fact that he yras on the threshold of an even more brilliant phase of his career when it was cut short by the unfortunate accident which cpst him his life Forgotten that is by all save those who remembered him back in his home town of Sac City Iowa The tall corn state sends out many famous athletes in various sports and it is one of the recommendations in favor of that rural aiea that it seldom fails to give its homestate heroes full recogni ¬ tion for their exploits In the case of Earl Dew that recognition comes posthumously through no fault of the citizens of the tall corn country because Dews career was so meteoric that it was cut short by the un ¬ fortunate accident just about the time the idea had become generally accepted that he had accomplished something unusual unusualThrough Through William Gillespie secretary of the Jockeys Community Fund and Guild it is learned that J C L ke secretary of the Sac County Fair Association is sponsoring the erection of a memorial in honor of Dew at the entrance to the Fair Grounds in his home town where he rode the first race of his career The memorial will be in the form of a gate with stone posts upon each of which will be a stone plaque On one will be a picture of the pony on whose back Earl had his first ride as a boy of fourteen and who is still alive today todayDEW DEW ASTRIDE MIOLAND MIOLANDOn On the other will be a picture of Dew astride his favorite mount Charles S How ¬ ards Mioland Under one picture will be inscribed the following followingIN IN MEMORY OF the great racing centers of this con ¬ tinent to become the foremost rider of his day in the worlds most virile sport Born May 2 1921 his conquering sweep embraced a short life He died as he lived February 2 1941 with hoofbeats echoing in the dis ¬ tance BERT McGRANE McGRANEBeneath Beneath the picture of Dew and Mioland will be inscribed the following followingEARL EARL DEW National Riding Champion 1940 1940Earls Earls Record Year Mounts 1st 2nd 3rd 1938 468 73 71 54 1939 723 103 113 96 1940 1377 287 201 180 2568 463 385 330 330A A REAL FRIEND AND A GREAT RIDER He will ride the favorite up there find the track wide the turns well banked and clear sailing along the rail railIn In his letter to Gillespie Lake writes The memorial Mr Gillespie is being sponsored oy me personally and is being erected from public subscription The Sac County Fair Association of which I am secretary is in such financial condition that it could not bear the expense The memorial ill cost slightly over 1000 Contributions in small communities are rather difficult but it shall be built regardless I consider it one of the most important things I have ever done in my life and it is beyond question for one of the greatest boys that ever lived livedWhile While I am not a relative of Earls I would have to be his father to think more of him than I did I am a man of very ordinary circumstances the manager of a local tele ¬ phone business businessI I hope that if you are ever near Sac City you will call on the writer who will be very glad to view the memorial with you Thank ¬ ing you for the favors shown me I am Respectfully yours yoursJ J C LAKE Secretary Sac County Fair Assn AssnThe The entire Dew Case from his rise to fame through his duel with Taylor to his unfor ¬ tunate death provides us with a concrete illustration that racing is a sport which has those qualities which grip the public imag ¬ ination DEATH SHOCKING NEWS NEWSThe The sports world hasnt been as shocked since Knute Rockne met his death in an air ¬ plane accident in a Kansas wheat field as it was last winter by the news that Americas leading rider a boy who had won the title onlv a few days before had died as the result of an accident he met while making a Sunday afternoon appearance at Agua Caliente CalienteNews News that Santa Anita Park through managing director Charles H Strub had presented Dews parents with 5000 and named a feature race in his honor met with the approval of sporting fans every ¬ where It was as though all felt a glow of selfsatisfaction that the sport of which they were so fond had lived up to their expecta ¬ tions of it by the recognition accorded a boy who was as a very trite and true saying has it nothing but a credit to the profession he gracedNow graced Now comes word that further recognition is being accorded the clean young man who made his mark in racing In its erection to commemorate the achievements of a brilliant young rider that stone gate becomes a shrine which stands for all thats good and clean in one of the greatest of sports participated in by man and beast to the advantage of all concerned horse racing
