HYSTERICAL The Circle S Stable racer defeated Big Ben and Big Pebble the latter winner of the Widener Cup last winter in the Red Cross Handicap at atHollywood Hollywood Park Monday SIRES AND DAMS Bv CHALLENGER Saratoga Sales Open August 4 About 650 Yearlings to Be Sold A B Hancock Largest Consignor Ariel Yearlings Will Be in Demand HOLLYWOOD Calif June 18 18The The Saratoga sales will get under way the night of August 4 and as usual will continue for three weeks A few changes will be noticed in the schedule one being that the Mereworth Farm of Walter J Salmon will take over the Monday night formerly devoted to the consignment of the late Willis Sharpe Kilmers Court Manor Among those who sold last season but who are not listed as consignors this year are Coldstream Stud A S Hewitt Holly Beach Farm Labrot and Company and WE Caskey There has been much speculation as to what effect the war situation will have on prices and though frank to say one mans guess is as good as anothers We look for about the same levels as those of last August The highestpriced yearling of the 1940 season was 18000 and in the year before 20000 In our humble opinion no yearling or untried horse is worth over 25000 and we believe a check would reveal the fact that the best as a group are those selling between 5000 and 10000 This season there has been an uncommonly large number of yearlings taken from the ring at from 200 to 1500 and which have earned many times their purchase price It is a new story and setup every year and still one of the most sporting angles of horse racing Regardless of the price paid it takes a season to find out whether a particular purchase is a champion or a dud Many highpriced youngsters have failed miserably while a Man o War at 5000 has returned millions in earnings stud fees and the winnings of his get getEach Each year youngsters by particular stallions are in demand Due to the score of Whirlaway Proud One Thumbs Up and others yearlings by Blenheim II will be eagerly sought So will those of Ariel due to the score of his ninny juveniles this season Mail o War babies are always popular and though colts by Big Red are seldom seen in a sales ring there will be two offered liy Harrie B Scott acting as agent They are a chestnut colt by Man o War Sun Emerald by Sun Briar and a chestnut colt by Man o War Cresta by Whisk Broom II In the group there is also a chestnut filly by Man o War Polymera by Polymelian For his own account Harrie B Scott is offering a highclass group by different sires out of daughters of Man o War Included is a bay colt by Blenheim II War Lassie by Man o War bay colt by Sweeping Light Boadicea by IMan o War bay colt by Blue Larkspur Flaming Swords by Man o War bay colt by Pharamond II Ship Ablaze by Man o War and a bay colt by Sickle Argosie by Man o War Among the Scott fillies to be sold is a bay by Pharamond II Under the Guns by Man o War chestnut filly by Jean Valjean Canteen by Man o War and a bay filly by Clock Tower Dead Reckoning by Man o War In view of the fact that Big Red is getting on in years this splendid group has great value In the Scott consignment there is also a fine colt by Sickle Yellow ITlag by American Flag FlagArthur Arthur B Hancock master of Claiborne and Ellerslie Studs will again be the largest consignor to the sales with the Mereworth Stud of Walter J Salmon a close second Hancock yearlings the greater number being by Ariel Bold Venture Display and Alfred The Great In a later issue of this paper a complete list of the Mereworth yearlings will be submitted but suffice it to say for the moment this group will rank with the best ever offered by the famous Kentucky farm The Blue Grass State offers the majority of yearlings sold at Saratoga and the list extends far beyond the yearlings of Arthur B Hancock and Walter J Salmon The Military Stock Farm of John S AViggins lias come to the front fast and both Lucas and Leslie Combs II are sending horses well worthy of a second look The Almahurst Farm of Henry H Knight will sell nineteen mainly representing the get of Ladysnian and Sun Teddy Belair Stud will sell five colts and eight fillies the majority being by Gallant Fox
