ROCKINGHAMS SCHEDULE OF STAKES ANNOUNCED ANNOUNCEDFeatures Features Planned for Saturdays and Wednesdays Opens July 21 21SALEM SALEM N H June 24 Rockingham Park modern and progressive racing plant will open on July 21 for its ninth annual summer meeting John P Turner Rocking ¬ ham racing secretary arrivecLrecently on a flying visit to untangle the annual stall sit ¬ uation and to issue the stake booh for the eighteenday meeting meetingStakes Stakes will be run each Wednesday and Saturday They are Salem and Maplewood slakes for the twoyearolds Matron Handi ¬ cap for fillies and mares Racelaiid Handi ¬ cap named for John Macombers Framing ham estate for the sprint stars and Granite State and the featured Rockingham Park Handicap for older horses horsesThe The Salem Stakes a fivefurlong event for twoyearold fillies with a purse of 2500 will be run July 23 the Raceland Handicap a sixfurlong event for threeyearolds and upward with a purse of 5000 on July 26 Maplewood Stakes a five and onehalf fur ¬ longs sprint for twoyearold colts and geld ¬ ings with a purse of 2500 on July 30 the C anite State Handicap mile and a six ¬ teenth for threeyearolds and upward 5000 the MatronHandicap a mile and a sixteenth for fillies and mares threeyear olds and upward 2500 on August 6 and the traditional Rockingham Park Handicap a mile and a furlong route for threeyear olds and upward with a 5000 purse to be run on August 9 the closing day of the meeting meetingThese These are not tremendous stakes involv ¬ ing thousands of dollars and a great deal of hullabaloo but they are worthwhile prizes the oldest in New England and there is no doubt that little Rockingham under the gifted direction of Lou Smith and under the racing secretaryship of John Turner will present races which will maintain the high quality of the Rockingham tradition traditionNominations Nominations for the stake events will close on July 7 two weeks before the opening of the meeting The late closing date results In the naming of thoroughbreds which are in training and potential starters Thus the Rockingham feature races usually have large fields of high quality
