Blood Lines of Extreme Speed VII I By SALVATOR The present table is the nexttolast in the series being presented in which the fastest performances at Various distances and by various classes of race horses are being systematically listed in the endeavor to ascertain which lines of blood are the leading ones when it comes to such a test testWe We are now surveying one of the shortest lists of performances thus far tabulated because it is at the longest distance one mile and a half This is really the greatest DerbyIt race in the world the English Derby It was also that of the Kentucky Derby for the first 21 years of its existence 1875 to 1895 In 1896 that event was shortened to its present distance of one mile and categoryThe a quarter which removed it from the true Derby category The American Derby was in the commencement also at a mile and a half being so conditioned from the outset in 1884 until the long suspension of racing in Chicago which began in 1905 When revived in 1926 it was still run at a mile and a half as also in 1927but was then like the Blue Grass event shortened to a mile and a quarter Today the Belmont Stakes is our only classic which is at a mile and a half Consequently it is the only American stake even with any claim to consideration as an authentic Derby DerbyAmong Among events for older horses moreover while races at a mile and a half were formerly established at all the leading meetings the rage for sprinting and lopping off the routes promiscuously of all sorts of contests both stake and purse events has reached such a stage that today we have only one of importance the Manhattan Handicap which is at a mile and a half It however is nobly sustaining the role allotted it and the renewal for the past season of 1942 saw the American record lowered by Bolingbroke the son of Equipoise turning in the splendid time of 227 as against the former mark of 228 made by Sorteado when he won the renewal for 1939 1939The The table below shows that 50 of our presentday race courses carry records at a mile and a half but if the dates were appended when the records quoted were made it would be revealed that many of them are of years standing A canvas of the 1943 American Racing Manual fromwhich the list has been compiled would reveal the further fact that not a single race at the list has been compild would the principal meetings of 1942 this including such as Arlington Park Washington Park Aqueduct Jamaica Detroit Rockingham Park Woodbine Park etc etc etcAs As the encouragement of distance racing is recognized as among the most Important duties of such associations their negligence in the matter is something much to be deplored deploredThe The table of records quoted therefore is not at all representative of the capacities of the modern American thoroughbred over the great classic distance Of the events now programmed at it most are overnight events for horses of moderate if not positively low class so their results give no indications of higher capability which is still another feature calling for real and deep regret It pre ¬ sents to foreign countries an entirely false picture of cur breed of horses as regards their gameness and stamina over distances which are a truly searching test of those qualities qualitiesHere Here however is the table Track TrackAgua Horse 1 1Bonnie Agua Caliente Bonnie Sea AkSarBen
