Charles Hatton THE JUDGES STAND Bv Charles Hatton MARC Hears Some Suggestions Giesler Cassidy Look Ahead NEW YORK N Y May 12 12The The National Association of Race Commissioners heard many good recommendations during its twoday conference in the plush oldworld atmosphere of the Waldorf Astoria but none that merited more consideration than the proposals of Californias Jerry Giesler The noted barrister could not he was sorry be present for the occasion But his message contained two suggestions a For increasing the turfs yield to War Picnics Accompany Kentucky Sales Suffolks Auspicious Start Relief agencies and b a ringing plea that tracks cease being needlessly self censoring about transportation This last is in rather sharp contrast to Gieslers original atti ¬ tude about Bay Meadows in his own bailiwick We could hope New York turf solons and track representatives were listening to all this because nowhere else is racings approach to this matter of transportation quite so squeamish Perhaps nothing will come of all the recom ¬ mendations read into the minutes in this meeting of the NARC as it is called Nevertheless the mere exchange of ideas among the turf solons of the 22 racing states of the Union is something in itself broadening their perspectives and sharpening their perceptions perceptionsIn In this session chairman Bev Broun of West Virginia and his fellow commissioners seem to have agreed the wisest resolution in this war time is to studiously avoid rocking the boat Marshall Cassidy is so exceedingly busy these days he never quite got around to addressing the NARC but the suggestion he planned to make seems too important not to mention it Cassidy intended urging the commissioners to advocate breeders awards in all purses at recognized tracks throughout the country along the lines of New York associations new policy which inci ¬ dentally was suggested by this publication thus rendering more effectual aid to the thoroughbred breeding industry industryKentucky Kentucky breeders many of them long have hoped for just such an opportunity as is now thrust on them to establish a market in the Blue Grass for the choicer Spa type of yearlings The present project is to offer about half the produce of the farms the first or second week in August at Keeneland the remainder in the fall fallIt It is planned with characteristic Kentucky hospitality to make daylong picnics of these sales setting up tents for the auctions and as dispensaries of juleps burgoo sandwiches and other refreshments It will be thoroughly enjoyable much as Idle Hours oneday meets were enjoyable enjoyableAssembling Assembling the yearlings at Keeneland will obviate the necessity for buyers to journey from farm to farm to inspect the consignments Conducting the sales in the Blue Grass will obviate the usual shipping expenses to the Spa the risk of sickness and injury to the offerings etc etcBreeders Breeders in Maryland Virginia and New Jersey probably will sell in the East probably New York I do not think I ever saw a filly progress as Askmenow did from the time she left Churchill Downs until the running of the Pimlico Oaks her owner breeder Hal Price Headley observed to the writer Menows broadbeamed daughter is in the Acorn Withers and Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmorits current spring meeting r rSteve Steve Judge apparently has Roy Martins trickkneed but unbeaten filly Our Page training steadily at the Nassau County course for the Acorn and Coaching Club ClubThere There would be widespread interest in an encounter between Askmenow and Our Page for both polled many votes as the Glamour Girl of 1942 Our Page beat Askmenow in their only meeting at Saratoga War Relic is virtually a forgotten horse these days but Glen Riddles sagacious trainer Walter Carter is conditioning him on Long Island for an attempted comeback after an absence of more than a year occasioned when he injured himself almost on the eve of The Rhymers Widener Cup for which he was the favorite favoriteMarket Market Wise another member in gopd standing of the I Beat Whirlaway Club is being prepared by suncured little George Washington Carroll to attempt duplicating his most noteworthy 1942 achievement of capturing the Suburban Handicap at Mr Longtails expense expenseBrokers Brokers Tips fabulous 500 son is eligible for Saturdays Metropolitan of 10000 but Carroll is undecided whether to select that fixture or some less exacting affair as the vehicle of the Cinderella horses 1943 debut The latest gem culled from Uncle Henry McDaniels unfailing flow of delightful wit and placed in circulation along the shed rows goes as follows followsIt It seems Uncle Henry was walking at his usual brisk pace on The Hillat Belmont Park the other morning when a fellow trainer hailed him with an envious Say I hope I am that active when Lam your age ageHow How old are you now McDaniel asked Fortyfive the other replied repliedWell Well youve got about 30 years to improve in Uncle Henry cracked crackedIt It is doubtful if any thoroughbred breeder other than a marketbreeder has sold so many worthwhile horses as has Joseph Early Widener one of the firmest friends the American turf ever has had Off hand we recall him disposing of Stagehand Sceneshifter and Rushaway for the proverbial song He also sold Quickly and Dustwhirl realizing scarcely more than 3000 for that celebrated brace of producers producersIndeed Indeed the latest bargain to come from Elmendorf s idyllic paddocks is a gift horse we understand Iron Shot who captured the International Chase for the Philadelphians young granddaughter Miss Ella Widener WidenerMrs Mrs P A B Widener took Miss Ella to see Iron Shot defeat those luminous stars of the chase constellation Mandingham Cottesmore Good Chance and Elkridge Both derived such vast obvious pleasure from Iron Shots performance it was contagious and many in their vicinity rooted for that durable fencer though he was the rank outsider of the field Suffolk Downs long 60day summer meeting a span extending through July 17 began auspiciously Monday when the attendance numbered an esti ¬ mated furnished excellent sport as racing secretary handicapper at Pimlico serves in a similar capacity at the East Boston park He effected a close finish in the Winthrop Handicap Suffolks opening feature when Incoming scratched home a neck before Eric Knight in a finish that had Bostonians blue corpuscles racing around the circuit at a lively rate
