Blood Lines of Extreme Speed IX By SALYATOR This is the concluding table in the series which has been appearing currently in DAILY RACING FORM the object of their presentation being to ascertain which families or male lines of thoroughbreds have been most successful in producing the American record breakers and record holders of the present judged by the lime test testThose Those previously presented gave tabulations of the American record holders at all distances from a halfmile upward to the close of 1942 the horses running the fastest races at such distances during the past season of 1942 those holding the track records at various of the most important and popular distances all horses that have run miles better than 136 and the like likeThis This concluding table is perhaps the most important and interesting of all it comprising all horses that have run a mile and a quarter in 203 or better up to Jan 1 1943 It is arranged according to record and secondarily according to years yearsA A mile and a quarter is the generally recognized championship distance of the American turf it being that of the Kentucky and American Derbys the Suburban Brooklyn and Santa Anita Handicaps The Widener Hollywood Gold Cup Classic Stakes and the majority of the greatest money prizes of the day for horses three years old or over Hence the importance attaching to the roster of the best and fastest performances over it can hardly be exaggerated exaggeratedBroomstick Broomstick had the distinction of being the first American thoroughbred to run a mile and a quarter in 203 or better scoring in 202 in 1904 His son Whisk Broom n was officially credited with running the distance in 200 flat when he won the Suburban of 1913 but that performance was at once challenged as incorrectly timed and has never been regarded as authentic by the general body of turfmen The honors on that account are held to rest with Sarazens performance in 200 made at Latonia in 1924 1924This This record which has now stood for 19 years has not since been more nearly approached than 201Js which time stands to the joint credit of Discovery in 1935 and Seabiscuit in 1940 During the past season of 1942 the fastest time posted was 201 jointly by Valdina Orphan and Shut Out OutTen Ten years ago the writer compiled for DAILY RACING FORM a table showing all performances at a mile and a quarter in 203 or better made up to that date The present tabulation is an expansion of that incorporating all subsequent ones A conscientious effort has been made to include each and every performance entitled to citation but the field has grown so large while a period of 38 years was to be covered that great research was required and a vast amount of verification and rechecking If any reader should detect any errors or omissions it will be a favor if they are promptly reported reportedAs As it stands the table comprises 109 different performances which have been recorded by 87 different horses of which 16 are credited with more than one per ¬ formance each These are Equipoise and Sun Beau four each Crusader and Challedon three each and Azucar Big Pebble Discovery Display Gallant Sir Kayak II Marriage Man o War Roamer Sarazen Sir Barton and Whirlaway two each Owing to the high character of these performances the weights carried have been listed They range from 139 down to 98 pounds the latter being the only one in which less than 100 pounds was carried and occurring but twice In the 109 performances 120 pounds cr more was carried no less than 59 times or over 50 per cent 125 pounds was carried 38 times and 130 or more 11 times a magnificent testimony to the ability of the modern American thoroughbred in the carrying of heavy imposts Horse Track Year Age Wt Time
