Three Suffolk Fixtures Draw Top TwoYearQIds TwoYearQIdsMayflower Mayflower Betsy Ross Standish Nomination Lists Near Record RecordEAST EAST BOSTON Mass June 10 A trio of twoyearold stakes raised substantially in value over previous runnings have at ¬ tracted the best juveniles in the nation for the 1944 renewals at Suffolk Downs The closing of nominations for the 25000 Mayflower and the 10000 added Miles Standish and Betsy Ross found near record subscription lists with the Mayflower drawing 88 colts geldings and fillies This five and a half furlong dash has its richest purse this season raised to 25000 from last seasons 15000 and now the most valuable twoyearolds stakes in New Eng ¬ land Its 1944 renewal will be its tenth starting from a lowly 2500 purse in 1935 and raised steadily in value and importance through the intervening years yearsAmong Among the Mayflower nominees are many who have already shown their worth as well as scores of youngsters as yet un ¬ tried but with many a potential star among the nominees The Col C V Whitney pair of BurgelArab and Jeep Greentree Stables Dockstader P W Hoopers Alabama and Hoop Jr Mrs W W Adams Flying Bridge and Key Ride Christopher Ranchs Count Did Lt Edward Laskers Flood Town are but a few of the flashy juveniles seeking the rich prize on July 22 closing day of the seaside course summer meeting meetingThe The Betsy Ross Stakes at five furlongs will be run on Saturday July 1 for a 10000 purse also a boost over the 7500 added of last year It is fashioned ex ¬ clusively for twoyearold fillies and has attracted 44 nominations The best de ¬ butants to show in public are eligible many of them highpriced purchases of the sales ring The race had its inaugural in 1938 for a 2500 purse and has been con ¬ tested annually since its purse value rising through the seasons until it now attracts the cream of the younger set setThe The Miles Standish Stakes is for colts and geldings its 10000 purse likewise an increase over the previous 7500 running With the exception of 1938 the Miles Standish has been a regular feature on the Suffolk Downs stakes schedule and its July 8 running date will serve as a prep for the 25000 Mayflower to be decided on closing day A total of 57 have been named for the fivefurlong feature
